MeFi post: Peanut Butter
He looks like he's dropped a ton of weight since Good Eats. I hope he's okay.

Yeah, he decided a few years ago that he wanted/needed to lose weight, so he retooled his diet. There were rumors that he'd had heart issues, but everything I can find just says that he decided to do it prophylactically.

MeFi post: Don't be satisfied with s*** that is less inventive than Vine.
The fact that anyone, including Edgar Wright, is sad that Edgar Wright got fired from a superhero(?) comic book movie is absurd. Hopefully he'll be forced to go back to making modest budget masterpieces instead of high dollar blubber.

The shootings happen frequently enough that it's always too soon, but what she was getting at I think (read the article, did not watch the videos) was more the post Sandy Hook fatalism, the belief that gun control is a political impossibility.

I think over the last few years the left has gotten way to used to seeing things as impossible rather than seeing them as hard and likely to take years of effort. A lot of victories have been things that appear to have happened... [more]

MeFi post: "on the lands recently abandoned by rebel leaders"
I grew up in the DEEP south where Robert E. Lee is revered as a hero and a brilliant scholar. Later in life I moved to DC. Late one evening I was riding home in a cab after a few drinks and looked up to see the lights of Arlington mansion overlooking the National Mall and it was at that moment that it suddenly dawned on me what a despicable, traitorous, bigoted man Lee was. He threw everything his nation had given to him, all that his very forefathers had fought for, for slavery and likely made... [more]

Most of the media coverage I've seen is ignoring or downplaying the gun control aspect — the media is making its usual shrugging motions that we all have to go through with every massacre caused by violent gun owners.

CNN host bans all gun control talk after Calif. mass shooting, then gets schooled by panelists

Best rap song of the year? Really? The flow is not cold, the lyrical content is unremarkable to put it mildly, and the beat isn't even that hot. The sample is cool, thank you for the post it's fascinating, but these critics are out of their minds. Runt the Jewels II will be out in a couple of months and this song will fade into oblivion.

I've been running a cookie company online, out of NY state for a little over a year and a half. Several of the regulations we follow are different because we only sell on the internet and we are in different states, so, ymmv.

As far as I gathered from my research, the shared commercial kitchen thing varied a great deal. In some, you could rent storage space for your ingredients, packaging, and equipment, others you had to bring everything with you every time. Some you... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Why not walnuts?
Short answer, they turn rancid.

Long answer, the more polyunsaturated fat in a nut the more quickly it will turn rancid. And roasted/toasted nuts are more likely to turn rancid than their unheated counterparts.

Walnuts have a lot more polyunsaturated fat than other nuts.
100 grams of walnuts contain 47 grams of polyunsaturated fat
100 grams of pecans contain 22 grams polyunsaturated fat

The idea that I should have to submit myself and my family to a police interrogation and review of my medical history in order to exercise my constitutional rights is not something that I could support.

I'm asking people to directly confront how the desire for a guarantee of physical safety has driven the rise of surveillance, the NSA, imperialistic war both at home and abroad. I'm asking people to stop and carefully consider that they may never be able to eliminate people like Rodger, and how the effort to do so has unintended consequences that we're living with right now.

This argument seems to conflate the rise of the surveillance state with the... [more]

That's so obviously true, and you can't even sell THAT to people. Thousands of little kids die in gun accidents/shootings each year and you cannot get the 2nd Amendment believers to change their stance on anything.

MeFi post: #truvadawhore
Medicine is all about balancing risk and benefits, in the case of a patient with known HIV infection and falling CD4 then it's obvious that the benefits of taking Truvada outweigh the risks. Lets not forget that these drugs have significant side-effects and the long-term effects of taking them in non-HIV+ patients just aren't known. They're certainly not sugar pills but they're not a panacea.
posted to MetaFilter by zeripath at 10:44 AM on May 24, 2014
it's incredibly irresponsible to promote widespread use of these drugs as a lifestyle drug in a fear-based marketing system.

That seems to be the era we're stuck with. Many health, beauty, personal hygiene products are advertised using (at least covert) fear tactics. I also see an analogy to widespread (very expensive) surveillance in the era of (vaguely-defined) terrorism.

Creating such fear is an attempt to take advantage of... [more]

The medical disease itself is bad enough; the leveraging of fear for profits

I think this overstates the pure fear component. There is fear marketing, to be sure, but when you see marketing focused on encouraging people to engage in risky (in many ways) behavior, you should ask what benefit they expect.

On the one hand, I agree. I recently spent a week learning the basics of Meteor.js for a project, but it turned out to be unsuitable for what I wanted to use it for. And I got this distinct feeling that besides being able to add a buzzword to my resume and knowing about a technology I could use for future real-time web projects (as opposed to content-heavy, largely static sites like the ones I usually build), Meteor knowledge was largely useless to me. It doesn't help me much with what I build... [more]

try to get "the system" to "do something" about a clear trajectory toward harming self and/or others

Committing someone involuntarily should require an extremely high bar obviously, but we should not need such a high bar to separate them from their firearms if they are on a 'clear trajectory,' imo.

Before buying a semiautomatic weapon -- which has no real use for hunting or for self defense -- you should need professional training, a six-month waiting period, and a one-on-one interview with a state employee. That's what we require for a car, I don't think it's too much to ask for a specialized machine whose only purpose is to kill humans.
