Sergei Brin ... says Google Plus was a mistake

Actually, what he was was his involvement was a mistake. If he'd said G+ was a mistake it would have appeared in the headlines of every tech journal and blog in 96 point type.

Google is known corporate partner of the NSA.
Signing up for Google+ is filling in your own file for Big Brother.

And make no mistake, Snowden revealed the Uncle Scam IS Big Brother.

Chrome is similar in its 'outing'. Whenever you first install Chrome, it asks you to 'sign into' Chrome. You can turn this off, but it is always there at first. It is so convenient and will keep your bookmarks in sync. Unless, of course, you don't want all your 'job search' bookmarks to show up on your PC at work.

I think the real reason Google+ fails is that it is unnecessarily complicated. Things may have changed, but when it first started I used it to keep track of... [more]

Google's overreach and G+ creep have done something that Microsoft never could: convinced me to use Bing.

I know this is mean but I would like people who work for google feel somewhat ashamed of themselves. Maybe the co-creator of G+ is slightly ashamed, but I bet he's working it out, 1% style.

MeFi post: On, Wisconsin
I'm just hoping the Equality State gets their shit together so they won't be the last.

WY just gave women the right to vote in order to have enough population to be granted statehood, to get more women to the territory where the guy/gal ratio was ~6 to 1, and to attract more people (women) to vote for Democrats and not Republican (1869 political versions) in an effort to keep abolitionists/black suffrage out of the state. (One of the primary backers... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Reduced highway mpg in a 1-year-old car. What gives?
So the bad news is, I'm a doofus, and the good news is that the oil change seems to have cleared everything up! City and highway mpg are spectacular once again. I was quite surprised. Lesson learned: double- and triple-check that manual to get the timing on the first and second oil changes right.

Thanks again, MeFi.

Every Autechre fanatic has very strong opinions about what albums are masterworks and which are merely good. I'm convinced each era has something really compelling to offer to someone, but not everyone is on board with everything they've done. #TeamConfield

Ask MeFi post: X-ray treatment for rheumatoid arthritis?
The best I can find for you is a German case-series from the early 90s. Reading it, it is anecdata at best (subjective decrease in pain only, using retrospective patient questionnaires, no controls), and given that the only RCT I can find had to be stopped early (Blazecock Pileon linked to the same one) you will have difficulty persuading a radiologist to break IRMER regulations (or US equivalent) on an unproven treatment even if you can get a rheumatologist to put the request in - it's not... Ask MeFi post: Seat swapping: a solution to vote splitting in Canadian politics?
Non-compete agreements have happened in British elections, on a national level and for individual constituencies, and it's very much not a new idea in Canadian politics, although having it done as a kind of ad hoc pairing would be novel.

The question in Canada would be the logistics. Voters are generally supportive of such deals for the scenario where other parties don't field candidates in a particular constituency / riding, but not when it's their own party standing... [more]

MetaTalk post: Breaking news - Not any more?
How many times are we going to have the same discussion over posts people think shouldn't grace the front page of Metafilter? Look, I think cat videos are pretty useless and don't exactly elicit quality comments because, well, what the hell is there to discuss? But I don't come in here attempting to persuade the powers that be to disallow them. You like vanilla ice cream, I like chocolate; I'll consume what tickles my taste buds and avoid what doesn't. It's a choice anyone can make.

The Apple post would have been fine if it had held off until the Keynote was done. It would have been a way better post if it had actually included the new announced technologies and had some actually analysis of what these were going to allow. Even the same post done when the Keynote started would have been better. Instead that post existed solely so someone had a place to chat. It was just a way of making sure no one else made the post in a timely manner.

Firstz!

Tim Geithner's book caused a little flare-up on the feeds. Some selected links:
Politico: Why Geithner drives liberals nuts “We were bailing out the financial system in order to do something to right the financial system and then reform the financial system,” said Jesse Eisinger, a prominent journalist at ProPublica who shared a Pulitzer Prize for reporting on practices that led to the financial crisis. “Instead, we essentially got the status quo and banks that are... There was a point, when the initial shock was stabilized, that Obama and Geithner had the major players of the financial industry in the White House and could have wrung real changes out of them.

They instead continued to offer reassuring hugs.

The initial bailout wasn't really the problem. The lack of change and accountability afterward was entirely inexcusable.

you don't see that as an obviously intentionally homoerotic piece of art?

It's obviously homoerotic. Whether it was obviously intentionally homoerotic is another question. After all, the men on that cover are contemporary with Socialist Realist Man, Mussolini's new virile man, and the men of the Physical Culture movement (which attracted a lot of gay men, but which was not, itself, a gay movement), etc. It's a model of masculinity in... Ask MeFi post: Cheap graphics card for 2008 iMac?
iMacs are built with laptop parts, and the graphics hardware isn't supposed to be user replaceable. It's modular, so it can be replaced, but getting it out is an enormous pain. What you're buying in this case is basically a spare part from an apple service center, not something that was ever sold in stores. For comparison sake, the real desktop version of that card (the 8800GT) costs about $15 used on ebay right now.
