MeFi post: "One or more of the following may apply to your particular idea"
"Why don't they just..." implies that people who are experts have negligently overlooked this trivial solution.

This is where I'm reminded of Harry Shearer's definition of an expert: a talkative fellow from out of town.

MeFi post: Life After Running
(Apologies, this got long)
Oh this hits so close to home. Not for me, but for my wife. We both came to running later in life (I was 35, she was ten years older than me and started a few years later when she was almost 50). When we were first married, running meant running to the store to buy a pack of cinnamon rolls to split.

But after we started running, we both fell in love with being active, for different reasons. For me, it was the first time... [more]

I feel his passing aptly marks the end of an era in which consciousness was very actively discussed and people really thought we might have the answers soon. That optimism hasn’t lasted and the debate has quietened.

"Only a rich person who never, ever faces even the tiniest consequence for their actions would start from "humans are completely fungible"."

That's the least charitable way to express the idea.

A notion at the core of traditional (western) deontological and utilitarian theories is not that people are fungible, but, rather that no one person has more intrinsic moral standing than any other person. Which is... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Gifts for runners
As on (occasional) marathon runner I endorse all of jedicus suggestions.

But, as a total fusspot, I would most appreciate a gift certificate to my nearest local running shop. Anything you have on your body for 42.2km has to be "just right" or it will drive you mad — so I like researching and trying things on myself.

MeFi post: They Owe it All To Clean Living
By the statistics I see, the sub I founded is in the top 3-5% on the site by membership. I've been moderating online spaces since the 90s and my philosophy is that a well-moderated space with a clear philosophy tends to lead to more discussion at more depth. Oh, and don't give in to rules lawyers. That's what attracted me to MetaFilter over 20 years ago. I think the size and ongoing nature of the sub I help run is a testament to that as it's quite a bit larger than most comparable ones.... [more]

She is supposedly there to speak directly to the "women of America" - and by women of America we mean white, middle-class, child-bearing, Christian women. HOWEVER, I don't think she nailed it because who she is really speaking to here is men. She's showing men what their women can be, ought to be, will be if they vote for these fuckers. See, that's how a woman should be. Smart but still in the kitchen. Very pretty, but not too pretty. God-loving so you know she is a traditionalist who... [more]

I think that this is a bad case to put before the supreme court and it's only going to make things worse. It would be nice if that weren't true, but it clearly is. What's going to happen is that the SC will rule that Trump can be on the ballot for [reasons] and that will cut the legs out from under any complaints about or action against January 6 people in general. Ask MeFi post: Sending toddler to two daycares?
Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. It sounds like it would be much better to do a switch to immersion at age 3 or 4 rather than two part time options. We have public four year old preschool (not immersion, but apparently decent) in our neighborhood and we may want to do that so I think I just got itchy to get the immersion in while can. I will be patient instead and maybe do immersion for ages 3.5-4.5 or something.

Offshore Wind has real potential to displace oil and gas, and rapidly.

It also increases Oil's labor costs--politically we are not allowed to have offshore wind in Louisiana yet, but already the wind power development in the northeast US is contracting welders and Louisiana shipyards that normally serve only oil and gas.

MetaTalk post: Policies on Trans Issues: Current and Future
I’m concerned about the policy around not linking to transphobic publications. Because truly that’s like … every major news organization I can think of. Who is deciding what’s over the line? I absolutely agree with not linking transphobic authors, because I think that’s somewhat easier to judge. Although I have a similar concern - plenty of authors have past transphobic content who have learned and updated their views and are now good or at least tolerable allies. I can think of several... I read the SKVentures article. As a professional software engineer of 30 years, I'm calling bullshit.

My field has gone through various waves of hype predicting its end. First there was the prediction that RAD (rapid application development) tools would kill it. Then there was the threat that offshoring to developers in India would destroy jobs in the US. Neither has made much of a dent.

MetaTalk post: Site Update
I've said it before, but it seems like this is an opportunity to bring Metafilter as it exists legally/on paper closer to what Metafilter is in the hearts and minds of the members and management. It will take some effort, it's causing a pause in some good things, but I think it will be positive in the end. There has been a mismatch between the technically-a-business structure and the more like a club/coop/nonprofit nature of the site for a while (at least since the googlebucks dried up). Even if... Kwine, I am sympathetic to that position. There is an old expression that the average American commits three felonies a day - ie, few of us would stand up to a close legal review of our every action. I also find it somewhat annoying that many people have taken a strong pro-legal-compliance perspective here who, I think, don’t actually think that every law must be complied with scrupulously. Because this particular issue codes as “labor versus owner,” people have strong pro-law views, but if... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How to develop attraction to post-menopausal women?
I was thinking about this overnight and two things occurred to me:

1. It feels like you're reaching for a "real" "medical" reason why you can't date women over, say, 35 - like, Something Chemical has changed and they are therefore, sadly, objectively unattractive to you because they don't have enough estrogen. Which is why you're assuming that women are post-menopausal at forty - it can't be culture, it can't be you, it must be... [more]

I think the solution is for YOU to become more attractive yourself by working on your personality, social skills, physique and more so these younger women actually want to date you. I'm a curvy almost 40 year old who has literally a neverending list of men of all ages to date on the apps. Don't feel bad for being ageist because you like what you like; also, we "older" women don't need you to like us because we have plenty of other options who find us sexy and interesting. I've watched that hour-long video from the SC now. But to be honest I feel like we've entered some kind of topsy-turvy Bizarro World.

This is not a positive environment to be in and no amount of managerial skill is going to get you out of it. At the end of the day, history comes for us all. Americans have no living memory of having to flee their homes because of external events, and this entire thing reads as bargaining. Maybe that sounds uncharitable and I don't mean it to; I'm just tired of Americans thinking that they are immune from reality. Yeah, it sucks having to abandon your home and your career in search of physical safety; but that's something that millions of people have to do every single year.
