MetaTalk post: MetaMetaTalk and MetaModeration Thereof
Fine. Let me rephrase.

You did not read that comment to be mansplainy.

As somebody who gets mansplained to on a regular basis, I read it to be clearly and obviously mansplain-y. The follow-up about how it was only POSSIBLY mansplaining and of COURSE it couldn't be rooted in the patriarchy/misogynist patterns of behavior does not make it feel less man-splainy. It is, in fact, what liberal or progressive men almost invariably say when called... [more]

zarq, that message is really man-splainy. There is no possibly about it. Reading it made me feel very strongly you considered EM to be not as smart as you, and not as much of an adult, and that she needed to have things explained to her using small words that she would understand. It did not read like a member of a community calling out somebody with power who had acted inappropriately.

When I get an e-mail like that in a professional context from a dude, I have to... [more]

totally out of character for the user

I am very fond of Zarq, but bless you: I disagree completely.

I find it amusing that I am now getting told by one gentleman I respect and enjoy whether or not my assessment of another gentleman etc etc as being quite in character to explain moderator dynamics to a junior female mod is correct.

Go on, sir. Tell me more.

the description cortex provided of zarq's correspondence didn't jump out at me as being in any way over the line, yet it was described that way.

I actually read it as another user described - as a gendered power imbalance that did not favor EM. A long time male user of the site, reaching out to a new female mod, to say 'you don't know the rules here, you're new, let me explain to you how to mod' would give me the screaming jeebies. The implication... [more]

Ask MeFi post: GameFAQs but for aspiring auto mechanics
Schrodinger's Box is a YouTube channel that came to mind when you mentioned "walks you through the typical problem-solving paths." The guy who runs it is a little prickly/condescending when he talks about other YouTube channels, but he's very focused on giving people fundamentals that they can generalize across all kinds of cars/situations, rather than showing them what to do once they've figured out (or just guessed about) the problem. Here's a video where he diagnoses a no-start on a... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How to deal with men's negative humor?
Well this was a welcome slap in the face to how I sometimes treat my wife. I'm going to make a great effort to change this ASAP as I've noticed it wearing on her and the last thing I want to do is keep her on edge around me. She should feel the opposite. I don't have more to add, everyone else has summed up why men do this and how to counter it. I just felt the need to let you know that this woke me tf up.

MetaTalk post: What's one change to Metafilter that you'd like to see made, or tried?
When we want to have control over our own posting history (because, in my case, people in real life were using my posting history to harass and threaten me in real life), the archival integrity of Metafilter is sacrosanct

I have said a bunch of times, and will continue to reiterate, that we are open to talking to folks about removing stuff they have privacy/history/etc. concerns about. We will, can, and do remove stuff like that on a regular basis; it... [more]

You understand that most people don't even make $50,000 for working all year round, right? The people who think that $50,000 isn't very much money are not in anything like the majority and their experience is not typical.

StickyCarpet, your mom and friends sound like they were basically reinventing cohousing. I'm sorry that her health stuff threw that for a loop, what a bitter irony.

I loves me some Anne Lamott, and that essay was wonderful. But there's one point where I depart significantly from what she describes, and that's sex. I know that if a driver ever kills someone I love, the rage I will feel will destroy me.

My brother was the passenger in a car driven by his good friend when they ran into a tree. The crash killed my brother, while the other passengers only received minor injuries. No intoxication was involved. At the funeral, my mother approached the driver and told him that she didn't blame him. That he should forgive himself and live a good life. She told me... [more]

MeFi post: Jeggings, rebranded
I loathe this trend, which I inadvertently stumbled into recently when my last pair of a now-discontinued brown denim Dockers got ripped. I don't like them for a couple reasons: First, they wear out faster and their fit changes. Artificial stretch is temporary and gives way to weird sags. Second, and more importantly, they seem to breath a lot less than even tight-cut regular denim jeans, and I don't like feeling sweaty wearing them. I live in Southern California, and if I still lived in the... [more]

I have this same problem. I now preemptively patch trousers before I wear them-- I get an iron-on repair patch and zigzag stitch over it from the inside of the crotch. This extends the life of the trousers by a good while. The hole develops anyway, but it's easier to patch over if there's a second layer of fabric there already.

I have tried a roomier fit, tailoring, etc. and it doesn't seem to matter.
