another option to work around this is to preview the comment (using the "preview" button, not live preview) before changing tabs. that way your actual comment gets saved in the page rather than just being content in a form textarea.

I skip FPPs that don't interest me. Sometimes they include links to NYT articles. I do not think that things that don't interest me should be avoided, except by me.

I tend to avoid NYT links unless I get a really good pitch on why I should read it, for three reasons:

1. I want to save my free articles for the really good ones.
2. Accidentally reading an NYT lifestyle article is worse than being Rick-rolled or 4chan trolled.
3. This is the paper of Judith Miller and Jayson Blair. Everything I read there needs to be corroborated from other sources.

So, yeah: I skip the NYT most of the time.

I think you're allowed to say whatever you want as long as you don't say it in a way that is unnecessarily inflammatory.

For example:

"I bet you believe your invisible sky wizard buried dinosaur bones to confuse us *rolls eyes* #lolchristian" (likely to be deleted)

vs.

On the other hand, that Decani (especially), three blind mice, shivohum and a couple others can be counted on to consistently defend, minimize and excuse sexual harassment does, in fact, say a lot about them. It says that they at least enable sexual harassment, and implies that they very might well enjoy engaging in it. I've got my mix burnt but I am, of course, having last-minute second thoughts about how maybe I should switch out one of the songs for another one by the same band. I probably won't, since they're already burnt and all, but MAN it's eating at me.

I guess instead I'll just talk about it in my accompanying essay, which I'm about two-and-a-half pages into right now.

I took the scientific route, and went to the Infodumpster. I'd have to call out netbros and tastybrains, both of whom seem to have sadly disappeared, but also Rory Marinich and nickyskye and reenum for awesome posts/questions that caught my interest.

I used to organize tables like that. I once did one from life's beginning, to life's end. It started with books on ED and IVF and What to Expect When You are Expecting, then went on to getting into college, resume writing, investing, retirement, dying, etc. We had a district manager come in and not get it at all. My favorite old-school trick (which used to work especially well on Livejournal) was to stack "/html" between letters, which would cause them to load one at a time. You could even nest that with blink and marquee, to truly draw out the snark.

I've been poking around the community/shakespherian page but I'm still not sure what participation looks like. Details would be helpful!

I'm 90% sure that the way G+ works is that you have to 'join' the community in order to comment on anything there. Once you've joined, you will get automatic notifications (both the little red G+ notification thing that's on every Google site and also an email, which you may find annoying) when a new item is posted.... That's pretty much an edge case post that could have gone either way. "Share your stories," full stop is not okay. "Can you point me to research on the topic?" is a perfectly fine post. It stayed. It could have been deleted with a request for a rewrite, but I suspect that whoever was on duty at that point was probably pretty busy trying to keep up with Metatalk posts, and it takes a bit of time to try to connect with the OP, get a rewrite, make the edits, undelete, etc.... I don't know what Tanizaki's backstory is with the moderators. There was another recent MeTa that indicated there was one, which surprised me because Tanizaki has struck me as a great contributor here; but I don't read every thread so I figured he was problematic on some topic I don't pay attention to, like maybe I/P or certain political threads. Oh man. Deletion is a gift, it's unearned, like grace. It's a way of obscuring how stupid and petty we all can be. Why would people argue with deletions? It's like the infamous self-callout MeTas that rarely occur: "I said this stupid thing, and I want everyone to know, dammit!"

I'm only adding a voice here to help balance out the selection bias that threads like these can suffer from: I don't mind the titles. It's rare that I saw them before, now I don't really pay attention. They were mostly a place for snappy one-liners, and the idea of them as "meta-comments" is kinda a stretch. But they're OK.

We need to have a standard that's higher than the rest of the Net.

Well, one would hope that standard is being tolerant about (or at least ignoring) what other people clearly find entertaining and fun and a positive aspect and to a website they participate in, but I guess getting all het up about it is just as good.
