I've turned off the teevee and radio, including NPR. I think there's a certain amount of mild PTSD from watching those pictures of the planes hitting the towers and the Pentagon, knowing that thousands had just been murdered, over and over and over. I am disappointed to say I am a member of MetaFilter when I see discussions handled this way.

Graeber is someone who I hold in deep respect after reading some of his works and I have close friends who have presented on panels and done similar work with him (after doing years of fieldwork and their own research) and to see him be grossly attacked by folks who wanted to prop up their pet theories was just mind boggling.

MetaFilter is sort of a "members only" site, in the sense that while anyone can read, only members can post, and I had no reason to think that you were a member were going to become one. The vast majority of the time, that isn't what happens.

Can't help but think that if we all acted like the subject of the post might show up to respond, the site would become a better place.

Well, you can give a gift anonymously, but the gifter won't be anonymous to admins. We'll have the Paypal info associated with the new gift account, but the giftee won't know who sent it. The invitation to create an account will say "a friend has given you the gift of MetaFilter."

Yeah, this seems like its banality and inanity were enough camouflage to keep it from being even noticed. I don't flag unless I click through (or something is really vile) and even now it just seems "Meh."

I would have deleted it, were I a mod and were I somehow seized of a caring. Even now it radiates apathy!
