The New York City Municipal Archives Online Gallery offers over 870,000 historical images related to the 'city that never sleeps,' including maps as well as video and audio recordings. A selection of 53 images from the collection can be seen at In Focus.
"...the nearly one million images (of their 2.2 million) [show] New York City throughout the years as seen by municipal workers, the NYPD, the Depression-era Works Progress Administration, and people like Eugene de Salignac, the photographer for the New York City Department of Bridges/Plant and Structures from 1903 to 1934."

Well, I knew I was going to love this, but my first almost-random clicks led me to the audio for the episode for Headlines in Chemistry with the title:
Introducing DDT, Whiskey from Sawdust, Robots
Did you ever feel like your mouse was the planchette of a Ouija board and the spirit in your office is your best friend?

You New Yorkers all think you're sooo special with your one million images. Here in the heartland, we have three maybe four pictures and that's plenty good enough for us

They are from property tax records I guess so they are like mug shots of buildings.
I just want to see what shit looked like, having the address on them probably makes them more useful for me.

Probably better right? That picture has your back through thick and thin. You played little league with those pictures, you milked your first cow with those pictures. Got grounded together when you got too drunk off rose hip wine at the prom. That picture was your best man and you were there for that picture when it got divorced. That picture likes it's beer cold and it's steak chicken fried.

The police department evidence photos are quite a treat.
They are graphic but very interesting. The living conditions
in most of the photos is quite an insight to the way the urban poor
lived in the early 20 century. Warning, top down photos of murder
victims.
