With the words "some days are grumpier than others," the official Grumpy Cat twitter feed announced today that Grumpy Cat (real name Tardar Sauce), possibly the most famous cat on earth, passed away this week from complications of an infection. Despite the grumpy face, little Tardar Sauce was apparently the sweetest of cats, and paradoxically, the grumpiness brought joy to millions. She will be missed.

Disliked her owners quite a bit but she brought joy to millions with that mug.

It's kind of weird how we all know how disgustingly offensive and ableist her real name was, and how we all sort of collectively accepted the flimsy excuse that her name was "Tardar Sauce" (the condiment in question, of course, is actually "tartar sauce"), but none of that was the cat's fault. She was just a very good kitty with a funny face, and I hope she's having a grand old time in the Land of Milk and Salmon.

Grumpy Cat...passed awayĀ

Good.

(not my actual view, just remembering them in death as they memed in life. good kitty, the time for scowling is over, rest)

Huh...I never got that vibe from her name. I just figured it was a quirky spelling for the condiment, like ā€œcheezburgerā€, etc. But then, Iā€˜m sometimes naive about such things, and didnā€™t really read up on the catā€™s back story, only catching fleeting glimpses of the memes as my chief source of awareness.

Anyway, cute kitteh and sorry to hear of her passing.

Huh...I never got that vibe from her name.

From what I remember, her name originally was just "Tard", then when she started to get internet famous and the owners realized they could cash in on the meme, it kind of got dubiously retconned into "oh, it's short for Tardar Sauce". So, yeah... not a huge fan of the owners. But GC herself was pure, and from all pictures and video I've seen of her public appearances seemed sweet and surprisingly tolerant of the attention forced upon her. May she rest in peace.

I got the news through my facebook feed, as news posted by Sam of Sam and Dave, with a picture of him holding Grumpy Cat in what looks to be an airport. This may be a weird timeline, but sometimes it comes up with nice stuff.

Thank you for sharing this timeline with me, Grumpy Cat.

I will wish many unpleasant things on people who use that kind of language about intellectual and developmental disabilities, but somehow, losing a cat isn't a thing I'd actually wish on anybody. My older cat is about seven and I would have hugged her, but I like having my face still attached to the rest of me and she is Not a Hugging Cat even if she looks like one, so we just did extra treats today to make me feel better.

One of the things that cheered me up in tough times was Grumpy Cat and I was always heartened that, because she was so young, she'd be around and making me happy with her feline misanthropy for years to come. I'm not quite as upset as I was when I heard about Tony Bourdain's passing, but it's not far off.
