Are there any non lethal flurochromes for staining bacterial genomes?

I wish to stain a colony of bacteria so that I can make relative measurements of their genome size, and I do not want to harm them in the process. Is this possible?

Gimme 5!

No PC should be without MS DOS 5 - apparently because it has mouse support, a full-screen editor, and an utterly inexplicable music video. Guaranteed to save you at least 45K!!! of RAM, that is.

Does it look bad to have a convicted felon as my last employer with regards to getting a job in the federal government (US)?

Who hijacked my Google cache?

How was my Google cache hacked? I have a web page that is fine, but the Google cache of the same page is a "spam" page with keywords linking to other web sites, random text and images, but also some valid links on my web site. How did that happen?

I need MBA advice to make sure I don't waste two years and $100k

Is an MBA worth it for me, or am I just trying to keep up with friends who all seem to have letters after their names now that we're hitting our late 20s?

Photostudio on a Shoestring

What can a commissioned retail salesperson deduct?

My mom is a commissioned retail salesperson for Gucci. Because she gets $13k/yr. in alimony, she always owes when she does her taxes. If she itemizes this year, what could she deduct?

What's this?

Any idea what this is? My sister has it in her kitchen, but doesn't know what it is. Our guess is it has something to do with grapefruits, but doesn't look like a regular knife or spoon. Grapefruit spork?

Clarence Thomas good judgement filter:

Should I report my colleague's sexual harassment? I am a male faculty member at a unionized academic institution. A male colleague frequently uses sexual innuendo during department meetings. (Examples: After being assigned a task: "I like to get used" to the more offensive: "I was orgasmic!") But now he's taken to making some comments to others one-on-one.

Love Me or Leave Me (bass/vocal)

Ok, so here's my spin on another old song. This Walter Donaldson/Gus Kahn composition was first featured in Florenz Zeigfield's 1928 Broadway musical Whoopee, starring Eddie Cantor & Ruth Etting, who took the song to #2 on the charts. In 1955, Doris Day starred in a biographical movie about Etting called "Love Me or Leave Me" & her updated rendition became a giant hit. Flash forward to 1967... Nina Simone turned this hokey old Ziegfeld tune into a completely reworked masterpiece of piano & voice (download link is at bottom). My own version (heard best live, I think) is definitely inspired by Nina's, but it could never compare to hers -- I just do my own thing & try to make it my own a bit. It's a fun song to do... audiences seem to love it. Incredible basswork once again provided by bass God Chris Conner.

Economic States

California = France? Norwegian bløgger Carl Størmer (via THE BIG PICTURE) made a U.S. map substituting the state names for other countries of equivalent GDP. Some of the substitutions are funny: Illinois = Mexico? Texas = Canada? New Jersey = Russia? Hawaii = Nigeria? Oregon = Israel? But your economic mileage will vary: apparently California no longer has the "sixth-largest economy in the world", no matter what The Governator says. Wikipedia chimes in, while some Californians don't want to be bothered with facts.

Smells Like Astroturfer

Is PreacherTom an astroturfer? He's made 13 posts to the blue, all in the past couple of months. And all 13 of them start with a link to Business Week. There's someone with the same name on Netscape.com's digg-esque site who does the same thing, and one on StumbleUpon, too. And that's not all. Am I being paranoid? Is this even worth frowning on, as long as they're all decent posts?

Deck The Halls

A great arrangement of a classic tune by the Sovereign Brass, an all-brass quintet, which was an impromptu thing between my friends and I to spread some Christmas cheer and create a few new arrangements of some old chestnuts.
