MeFi post: that's why god made the movies
I saw The Peanut Butter Falcon by accident, and damned if I wasn't uplifted.

There are no Hal Hartley movies. Also Eurovision: Song of Fire and Ice which has got to be one of the most upbeat movies of recent history. Everyone is so nice. Watch it.

Ask MeFi post: How do I (male, 30s) mimic this type of French fashion?
I think a search term you might want to look for for shirts would be "drop shoulder". That's going to give you that relaxed look that you can see in the La Piscine pictures you posted, as well as the Sting picture (but not the Serge Gainsbourg). If you look at the shoulder seams on top, you'll see that for La Piscine and Sting, they both hit below the shoulder, rather than on top (as in the Gainsbourg).

MeFi post: Ladies, how often does you man think about the Roman Empire?
My daughter texted me a week ago to ask how often I thought about the Roman Empire, and my first response was to confirm she didn’t actually want to be pointing a camera at me before hearing my answer.

When I told her it was normally just a couple or three times a year, but coincidentally had included the day before, she was incredulous. She asked why. I said we are American citizens in 2023, living through the decline and fall of the American empire. Why aren’t you... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How annoying is your partner?
It seems you want her to:
Not pee when you made plans (?)
Always shower before dates (is there an actual hygiene issue? what does that look like if you’d ever move in together?)
Not speak or laugh too loudly
Never (?) have PDA around coworkers (what is she doing? Trying to hold your hand? Kiss you?)
Can’t ask you for favors that you find to be “too big of a pain in the ass”
Has to coordinate better on any errands... [more]

Please dump this woman so she can pee without someone resenting her for it. Yikes.

I'm coming at this with a "historically I am not a long term relationship kind of person" perspective but no it has never once worked out for me when I've dated someone I'm annoyed by.

BREAK UP. Every time you tell her you love her, you are gaslighting her.

Your contempt, disrespect, and dislike towards her normal manner of existence (omg how fucking dare she PEE before leaving the house!!) absolutely precludes any possibility of love.

I cant see how ‘doesn’t shower before dates’ and ‘PDA in front of colleagues’ adds up to ‘can't really care for and support me in the way I need.’

You listed a lot of actions — laughing, reaching, going to the bathroom — and call them a personality problem. But those aren’t personality traits, really. They’re just actions. Anyway, I think you don’t really like her and you want to make that her fault so you’re not a jerk who dumps a perfectly nice person. That’s fine,... [more]

I have seen this a lot from men who seem to think their girlfriends are not quite enough of a trophy to impress their buddies. And she may be reaching out for reassurance because she feels you pulling away a little.

You answered your own question. Wikipedia does not allow original research - true or not. Wikipedia does not use "truth" or "falsehood" as a metric for articles - instead, they go off of verifiability. As you've said, those statements are not verifiable.

I would simply remove the incorrect statements with a note in the edit... [more]

It's a good article and funny.

I was aware of foot fetishists (how could I not, they are the butt of so many jokes) but not of the foot wiki site. That seems like both a tremendous service to that community, and also such an inappropriate way to commodify public women. But of the ways to commodify women, like compared to those sites that post upskirt/voyeur/revenge photos or the ones that do "deepfake" porn, this seems further towards the benign end of that... MeFi post: It's 106 miles to Chicago, we have half a pack of cigarettes...
With almost every beloved 80s comedy, there's stuff that makes us cringe today. There are rape jokes, there's racist stuff, creepy conservative undertones, etc. Offhand I can't think of any jokes in this movie that would be super offensive to a modern audience, and that's pretty remarkable for a big, loud, coked-up 1980 comedy with a bunch of National Lampoon guys involved in it. It's still the fun, crazy movie you remember from when you were a kid, without those moments... [more]

Definitely going to watch this. I lived in Chicago from 1977 to 1982--in other words, from the time that Animal House blew up to a few months after Belushi died--so I think that you can imagine how big of a deal he was in the lives of me and my peers at the time. A lot of us have parents who to varying degrees emotionally or physically abused us or have grandparents who are openly racist or homophobic and aren’t going to change. Caring for people is for the most part an obligation and not dignified in any way.

The bit in the article about being like the Little Prince alone on a planet resonated with me. In my experience, eldercare can be extremely isolating, especially right around the time of death. That palliative time is very moment to moment in a way that no one else is quite living around you. And then it's over and the world suddenly speeds up around you while you kind of blink back into it. But then you are moving at the slow pace of grief, so you're still quite isolated in a lot of ways.... [more]

Recently did a kind of a speed run of this… I live in the US, my folks are in the UK, we would video calls every so often and for a couple of calls my mum seemed off… a lot older, somehow diminished. My mum has never seemed old to me. A few weeks later I get a call and she’s gone in to hospital with pains and breathing trouble. Everybody here is raising excellent points. Add to all of the above that your entire past with your parent accompanies you on this particular journey. So when your parent is refusing to, say, eat the food that the nursing home provides because they don’t like it, but said parent was a fanatical enforcer of the “I am not a short-order cook and you will eat it whether you like it or not” rule, it can push your buttons. A lot.

Unfortunately the answer is often 'because it is'. Old people are different from kids in size, and strength, and are (IMO) afforded a high level of assumed autonomy even when they are physically or mentally unable to use it anymore - retained respect I guess.

And the tools are less - less daycare, transport is harder.

Most of us aren't trained nurses either, not yet inured to the unfortunate indignities of dealing with aging parents.... [more]

I can see the point, but people laugh about their kids doing hilariously gross and/or annoying things because they know that in most cases their kids will grow out of it and whatever it is is a phase that will pass. Elder care only gets worse and the end result is almost never a healthy, happy, independent grown-up who might even remember to call you on your birthday. It's a lot harder situation to find humour in.

WHAT, NO STEP BY STEP? Pure trash.

I still contend that the S1E1 episode of Cheers is the best-written half-hour pilot, and maybe comedy episode ever. It introduces every character and the vibe of the bar perfectly. This may be complicated by the extinction of most of the Your Show of Shows episodes, and that The Dick Van Dyke Show might not have any standalone episodes.

On the comedy side, Frasier deserves a slot for "The Throne," Newsradio for "Arcade," and sneak in The Good Place's "The Trolley Problem." (Sitcoms tend to rely a lot more on preestablished characterization so I guess it's more challenging for them to have episodes that really feel standalone.)

I wish they’d credited the writers. For instance, “Chuckles Bites the Dust” was written by the great David Lloyd who also wrote some of the finest episodes of Frasier, including the brilliant “Ham Radio”, when Frasier Crane directs a radio play. Incidentally, I’d absolutely have put that on a list of best tv episodes.

Ask MeFi post: How to stop breathing through my mouth, nighttime edition
For someone who has sinuses that really make it difficult to breathe through the nose, I would be concerned about the potential of mouth taping to reduce oxygen levels and cause more problems than it solves. (And I say this as someone who uses mouth taping while using a nasal-mask CPAP machine, but that combination means that enough air pressure is coming in to the nose that routine congestion is not a problem.) Another quite safe thing to try would be nasal irrigation, whether with saline... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Muslin Coverlet & Lint
Historical linen (which might be flax or hemp or nettle) isn’t linty at all, but a lot of modern ‘linen’ (which might be flax or hemp) is processed by chemically breaking it down into short fibers. The process is called cottonization, and it’s intended to make the fibers suitable for processing on equipment optimized for cotton. It also makes for short-lived and shed/pill/lint prone cloth. Basically fast fashion-enshittification of linen for both clothing and household textiles.
