FanFare post: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Whose Show is This?
Fun fact: she-hulk writer John Byrne was at the family bbq at the end.
posted to FanFare by jeoc at 3:36 PM on October 13, 2022
The whole main bit here is an homage to John Byrne's run on She-Hulk (which establishes a lot of the tone of this show). There's an issue where Jen says "okay, this villain is stupid," and literally tears through the pages of her own comic to skip to the end.

I was hoping for exactly this sort of homage. I really was. I did not expect them to directly address and even concede major criticisms of the MCU, in the text of an MCU production.... [more]

I enjoyed the callout about how annoying the D+ interface can be. And, for your enjoyment, some panels of her pulling the same stunt in the comics.

I began to call BS when Todd just got the bonus Hulk package (no rampage, no need to control himself, no need for the genetic anomaly that allows Bruce's relatives to metabolize GAMMA) and was glad that Jen rightly got that retconned out.

I also felt happy for Matt who got to experience Jen's big... [more]

This was a hoot. I loved the Disney+ menu screen and Shulkie climbing out of it, much like how she sometimes climbed out of the comic book panels.

I guess I don't have that much of an issue with the DD tonal change. We see it all the time in the comics after all! Different writers, different takes, different levels of comedy and grim to serve the story at hand.

I've always taken this sort of thing as a tacit exploration of how one's self-perception is different from how others perceive them. Like, Matt Murdock probably feels overwhelmed and hopeless a lot of the time, taking on pro bono cases... [more]

You guys, Daredevil was barefoot and carrying his boots the next morning. I love this show. I had to explain this to my partner, so in case others didn't catch it - women go barefoot with shoes in hand the next morning because it sucks to stuff yourself back into high heels after a night of fun, particularly when you're tired, hungover, sneaking out of some person's place, etc.

As my confused partner noted, Daredevils boots would not have or engender any of those... [more]

I gotta say that Daredevil tensely facing off against five or six guys advancing on him only to have Jen drop through the ceiling onto them made me laugh out loud. The tossed-away “She-Hulk Smash” was the icing in the cake.

I was on edge because of the giant needle last ep (and have a needle phobia) so when Jen found herself in a room with a man with a sword (giant needle), a vampire (teeth needles) and a porcupine (ball of needles) I was so very, very nervous.

Which made the support group *really* satisfying when it turned out not to be a trap.

Jen taking that shot of vodka before her first date is possibly the hardest I've related to a MCU character ever.

I still think Jen is adorable as all get out. I really did feel like Tim Roth shined in this. He's like every Malibu new agey goofus I've met.

So not only did the staff perfectly anticipate what the online haters’ reaction to the show would be, they went ahead and made them the Big Bads for the series? That is some pro-level trolling right there.

Madisynn was a hoot. She’s like a gender-swapped Jason Mendoza.

And now I want to see them team up for adventures in the multi-verse.

I would love an indepth procedural about superhero law and order, but I would also love to go for bottomless gin and tonics with Madisynn and Wongers. This silly show is fun.

Also I enjoyed the "why is that even an alert" joke about no new matches, but my boyfriend was deeply offended by the premise that Tatiana Maslany would not be a hit on the dating apps, corporate headshot profile pic or no. This is where his suspension of disbelief broke, and fair enough.

"When you meet someone irritating, try to imagine they are a Zen master who is trying to teach you something." : I canNOT remember where I read this coping mechanism, but "gender-swapped Jason Mendoza" just brought it back to my memory. Please let Wong finally realize what Madisynn is trying to teach him. :)

I like She-Hulk because it's fun and low stakes and I hope they don't try to plot it up. I get that's part of the MCU but I get tired of the whole "but where is this going??????" attitude. Does it need to go anywhere? What if it's just playful superhero lawyer show and that it? Does that mean it's bad?

(This is not really directed at anyone here.)

Maslany is so adorable and is clearly having so much fun. Parts of the show could be... [more]

Multiverse of Madisynness

Perfect.

I enjoyed this episode thoroughly. Wong has been played as the straight man to the humor since the first Dr. Strange movie, so that's nothing new. Madisynn stole every scene, and calling him "Wongers" and being oblivious to his Sorceror Supreme role deflates how seriously Wong has been taking it. Good fun.

the thing about Madisynn is that she acts like a regressive stereotype but the second time you see her she’s successfully navigated a fire land, a goblin land, and a deal with a demon, and she has a still-beating heart in her hand. Despite her affect she is as capable as any MCU hero. I’d be down for an I Am Groot style mini-mini-series about her adventure—call it Multiverse of Madisynness.

I like Madisynn. She's basically a variant on the Stoner Dude. If it's a gender thing at all, it's that that kind of jolly doofus is very rarely cast as a woman. The first example that comes to mind in the MCU is Trevor Slattery.

In situation comedy, it would be the Kramer/Reverend Jim sort of character.

One thing I like about that kind of character is that they sort of exist outside the rules of the drama. Expecting depths is sort of missing... [more]

the one real failing (IMO)—Tahani from The Good Place busting into the court room and throwing shit with no apparent reason or explanation

Tatiana Maslany is adorable and is having so much fun. I really don't care if this show is good or bad, honestly (although I loved this episode) because she's such a delight.

I like her being a smart woman who also eats Hot Cheetos (always pick the Hot Cheetos*) with chopsticks and speculating on the sex lives of the Avengers. She's so much fun. I want to hang out with her!

As I sometimes do, I'd like to quote myself:

Let me see if I've got this right. A billionaire heir to Apartheid money who has ties to despotic dictators and who parrots the rhetoric of a movement that is in the process of dismantling American democracy, has, with the backing of Saudi billionaires, bought the largest propaganda outlet in the world.

I find this vaguely unsettling.

Lots of Black Twitter users have remained, doing what Black culture producers have always done in the U.S. and elsewhere - carving small spaces out of deeply racist institutions to share information, joy and resistance strategies in the face of overwhelming opposition.

It's been going on for centuries, and those folks who've chosen to remain are a clear part of that history.

You don’t have stage four cancer now *because* you discontinued chemo. Those two events are unrelated, truly. Cancer … does what it’s going to do and there were risks in continuing chemo, too. A lot of people will say that chemo nearly killed them, or reduced the quality of the time they had left. I hope you can separate the informed and thoughtful decision you made then from where you are now, and give yourself some grace. a precedent is now set which makes them more able to put Democrats up for expulsion in the future.

You need a 2/3 majority to expel a member of the house and, if the republicans ever get a 2/3 majority by themselves, the country is pretty much fucked regardless.

I was really excited when I heard Miller was doing a Furiosa prequel, but now I'm skittish. The character went through hell to get where we saw her in Fury Road and I'm not keen on seeing that level of violence. The world feels a lot meaner than when FR came out and my viewing habits these days learn towards avoiding a lot of violence. But it's George Miller and I have faith that he can pull this off.
