FanFare post: Doctor Who: The Giggle
But, of course, the biggest twist is the bi-generation of Fourteen and Fifteen and Ncuti Gatwa in his underpants!!!!

If you look closely at both their clothes - they sort of SPLIT Fourteen's Clothes. Fifteen got the Oxford Shirt and the Tie, and Fourteen kept the pants, the vest, and an undershirt.

....And that means...if Fifteen has the underpants, Fourteen is going commando.

I LOVED THIS SO MUCH.

I thought the Toymaker stuff was great - both commenting on the character's racist/Orientalist origins in the Classic series, while also making fun of stereotypes in a bufoonish way. The idea of the Giggle and dialing up of everyone's doom scrolling/online outrage was great - without really saying the problem is with the technology. The problem, as always, is how humans use it.

But, of course, the biggest twist is the... [more]

So I deliberately waited until after having seen this episode to come in here; after spending all afternoon in Midtown Manhattan at a play rehearsal (ON THE SAME DAY AS SANTA-CON, mind you) I raced home, stopping only to buy the tomato I needed for dinner tomorrow night, and immediately fired the TV up to watch this. So this is a very unfiltered (and spoiler-free) reaction.

MeFi post: How millennials learned to dread motherhood
My work wanted to be inclusive of families, so they scheduled a children's holiday party on a school day at 10am. American culture is so out of touch with parenthood/families/children, I can see why younger generations in the US are saying no thanks. As the article points out, if they do it, they are completely on their own and surrounded by people who are clueless.

Ask MeFi post: Scrambling eggs without nonstick pans or extreme effort
You can't cook scrambled eggs slowly over over low heat in a cast iron, carbon steel or stainless pan without sticking. That's really only possible with a nonstick coating. The reason food sticks is because raw food bonds with the metal. The way to avoid this is: (a) use plenty of fat so the proteins in the raw food set in the oil before the food can bond with the metal, and/or use a screaming hot pan so the proteins in the raw food set before the food can bond with the metal due to the... I use a Cuisinart stainless steel sautee pan, use butter and can usually flip the eggs so sticking is not an issue. For me the key is to get the pan hot enough to fry the butter bubbling then I turn it down.

MeFi post: What was it like to build the Millennium Falcon?
I had a moving company in the 1980s. One of my customers was LucasFilm. On one occasion Mr. Lucas was attending a big electronics show in Las Vegas, and I drove several of the models there in a van. One of the models was the Millennium Falcon, which is about a meter across. Another was one of several R2D2 robots.

When Mr. Lucas displayed some of his bigger props at the Marin County Fair, we delivered the Death Star and the Land Speeder, complete with manikin as a rider.... [more]

Ask MeFi post: What's your plan for fascist America?
This question annoys me because it is framed as you asking us to wake up. the rest of us who have been marginalized have been living this for decades. I would be more concerned about your ability to survive a fascist government and whether you could tell the difference if you would be a comrade who would narc me out or not. I would recommend you learn how to understand your privileges and take the time to learn from marginalized groups who have been working on this for decades and learning to... [more]

We are already living in a country where many women don't have access to their choice of safe reproductive healthcare.

We are already living in a country where over 1/6 of the black population is legally disenfranchised due to (often non violent drug related) criminal record.

MeFi post: Farm robots helping put healthier produce on the table
Silliness aside, I think the computer-vision based "hand" weeders (whether they use mechanical removal, lasers, or whatever) are a really exciting development. This, not art, is what robots should be doing. Drudgery! No more humans bent over in the hot sun hoeing, no more spraying the whole arable world with carcinogens. Robots in the fields, humans in the shade, writing poetry.

MeFi post: The Language of the Third Reich
My favourite part of this book is the chapter on punctuation:

From time to time it is possible to detect, both amongst individuals and groups, a characteristic preference for one particular punctuation mark. Academics love the semi-colon; their hankering after logic demands a division which is more emphatic than a comma, but not quite as absolute as a full stop.

One might assume, Klemperer goes on, that the Nazis would use a... [more]

MeFi post: Sentenced to a job in fast food
On the other hand, the real employees of whichever fast food place she will serve out her sentence in are the ones who are being punished.

If I had been selected to spend some time educating one of the monstrous customers at my former cafe job in the intricacies of the position, I doubt I would have considered it punishment. My entire crew would have met the opportunity with glee.

If I were an ordinary employee at the fast food restaurant where the perpetrator is sentenced to work, I would quit on the spot, or at the very least demand to be transferred to a different shift. At best, she'll be an inexperienced, unmotivated employee who will screw things up and slow things down, and at worst she'll be an absolute nightmare.

I understand what you mean by that, Clinging to the Wreckage, but having worked in foodservice for many years (not currently, but recently) I know that my coworkers and I often discussed what it would be like if people, especially rude customers, were forced to work and endure what we did. I think the point about 20 hours vs. 65 is, in this context, extremely relevant to how well this will work and I kind of wish the judge had taken this into consideration.

I'm all for creative sentencing that tries to correct instead of punish behavior. Based on the video and Hayne's actions that has a chance at working here. I'm a little bothered, though, that working in a fast food restaurant counts as punishment for a crime, even if I somewhat understand why it does. It feels like telling the people behind the counter their job is a punishment for the crime of either wanting or needing that job.

FanFare post: Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder
Well you can certainly see the Disney money up on the screen.

Yes, but it's still Doctor Who in that most of the episode takes place in the same corridor. Which is good! It felt like a nice combination of having a bigger budget but also being creative with that budget.

I also loved the design of the rusty robot. I'm going to assume the Doctor made another return trip to rescue Jimbo after he rescued Donna.

The whole main bit here is an homage to John Byrne's run on She-Hulk (which establishes a lot of the tone of this show). There's an issue where Jen says "okay, this villain is stupid," and literally tears through the pages of her own comic to skip to the end.

I was hoping for exactly this sort of homage. I really was. I did not expect them to directly address and even concede major criticisms of the MCU, in the text of an MCU production.... [more]

I enjoyed the callout about how annoying the D+ interface can be. And, for your enjoyment, some panels of her pulling the same stunt in the comics.

I began to call BS when Todd just got the bonus Hulk package (no rampage, no need to control himself, no need for the genetic anomaly that allows Bruce's relatives to metabolize GAMMA) and was glad that Jen rightly got that retconned out.

I guess I don't have that much of an issue with the DD tonal change. We see it all the time in the comics after all! Different writers, different takes, different levels of comedy and grim to serve the story at hand.

I've always taken this sort of thing as a tacit exploration of how one's self-perception is different from how others perceive them. Like, Matt Murdock probably feels overwhelmed and hopeless a lot of the time, taking on pro bono cases... [more]

You guys, Daredevil was barefoot and carrying his boots the next morning. I love this show. I had to explain this to my partner, so in case others didn't catch it - women go barefoot with shoes in hand the next morning because it sucks to stuff yourself back into high heels after a night of fun, particularly when you're tired, hungover, sneaking out of some person's place, etc.

I would love an indepth procedural about superhero law and order, but I would also love to go for bottomless gin and tonics with Madisynn and Wongers. This silly show is fun.

Also I enjoyed the "why is that even an alert" joke about no new matches, but my boyfriend was deeply offended by the premise that Tatiana Maslany would not be a hit on the dating apps, corporate headshot profile pic or no. This is where his suspension of disbelief broke, and fair enough.

Perfect.

I enjoyed this episode thoroughly. Wong has been played as the straight man to the humor since the first Dr. Strange movie, so that's nothing new. the thing about Madisynn is that she acts like a regressive stereotype but the second time you see her she’s successfully navigated a fire land, a goblin land, and a deal with a demon, and she has a still-beating heart in her hand. Despite her affect she is as capable as any MCU hero. I’d be down for an I Am Groot style mini-mini-series about her adventure—call it Multiverse of Madisynness.

I like Madisynn. She's basically a variant on the Stoner Dude. If it's a gender thing at all, it's that that kind of jolly doofus is very rarely cast as a woman. The first example that comes to mind in the MCU is Trevor Slattery.

In situation comedy, it would be the Kramer/Reverend Jim sort of character.

One thing I like about that kind of character is that they sort of exist outside the rules of the drama. Expecting depths is sort of missing... [more]
