Learning assertive communication

Can you guys recommend any resources for learning assertive communication? In my family I learned to avoid conflict at all costs. Therefore, I don't know how to approach "difficult conversations" directly.

Bring my website back to life?

What can I do with my personal website? I already have a blog and a picture gallery. I sometimes upload some code snippets or helper scripts written in python. I'm looking to do something more with my website, what else can I do with it?

short people got no reason

I got a new car! Unlike my old one, it doesn't have height adjustable seats. I am 5'0" and can barely see over the dashboard. Do they make booster seats for adults? How do other short people deal with this?

I ain't much on that book learnin'

I am pretty terrible when it comes to picking up technology books with the desire to learn about something. I always lose steam at some point. I am asking for tips/tricks/disciplines to get better, especially if you've noticed a difficulty doing this and turned yourself around. Is it possible that I am simply the type who needs to go to a class or learn through on the job training? Or is there a way to get better?

'General Geek' Seeks Employment?

I'm a general geek. I.e. I can do basic HTML, CSS, JScript, PHP, etc. I'm proficient in Photoshop, but by no means an expert. I'm the hardware troubleshooting guy for my family, and a few others (oy). What kind of job am I looking for? There is, of course, more to this...

Map Quizzes from Ilike2learn.com

Ilike2learn.com has a series of simply-wrought yet wonderfully mind-bending Map quizzes: check out North America if you're looking for a confidence booster, relive forth-grade geography by going through state capitals or impress friends with your knowledge of the European Peninsula. Find out how little you know about Africa and Asia, then peruse the mind-fuck that is Oceania. Heck, they even have capitals, oceans, lakes, rivers and mountains for the truly adventurous. The world's a big place!

How can we make a map with MapPoint and the Census Bureau?

We've got Census data in Excel from the Census Bureau. We've got a state all mapped out by census tract (using the unprojected boundary files, as they don't provide the projected files). What we don't have is a way to download values from the data files into the census tracts they correspond to. Is there some way to do this that we don't know? Will we have to write a program?

I have no original ideas! Help!

I need to recultivate my artsy hobbies, most specifically my writing and drawing. The problem is that I can't seem to initiate anything - I have no new ideas, nothing to work on. I'd also like to grow as a writer, but I'm my own worst critic and stop before I start (fear of failure and whatnot) - I'd like to hone my skills but I'm petrified of, well, sucking.

Get me to take more pictures with my DSLR

Get me to take more pictures! I bought a DSLR last year, but other than a week trip to Paris, I haven't used the camera extensively. Sometimes I feel it might be the size (a camera around your neck, to me, screams TOURIST). I've thought about walking around the neighborhood (I live in Chicago's north side), but have never gotten out the front door with my camera. I have no problem with my pocket camera.

"Leaving no trace [of our daily lives] is nearly impossible."

The Anonymity Experiment. Is it possible to hide in plain sight? Privacy-minded people have long warned of a world in which an individual’s every action leaves a trace, in which corporations and governments can peer at will into your life with a few keystrokes on a computer. Now one of the people in charge of information-gathering for the U.S. government says, essentially, that such a world has arrived.

I used to have a secretary, now I am the secretary.

How do I stop having "jobs" and start having a career? In particular, friends and (even) acquaintances often tell me that based on my skills and abilities they are surprised that I'm not doing more responsible (and therefore, I am sure, lucrative) work. But I can't figure out how to make the jump. Can you help?

Are we there yet?

The Gough, or Bodleian map is surprisingly accurate considering it dates from the 14th century. The Map is considered the first true map of Britain. Some say the red lines cris-crossing the map are roads, however, some disagree. You be the judge, because the map is available for interractive viewing at Queens University Belfast.
