Helps up plan our first real vacation!

Hooray, we're taking our first "big kid" vacation to New York City for a week! ...um, what now? (March 13-19 edition)

Help, I'm reading Proust!

I've started In Search of Lost Time and found I like it. Should I keep going? At page 80 I'm barely 2 percent of the way through the whole work; it would likely take me 2-3 years to get through all seven volumes. Has anyone finished the whole thing? Was it worth it? I don't want to read a couple thousand pages only to lose interest ...

Color films can simply be illuminated. Black and white films have to be lighted.

For the past year, director Stephen Soderbergh has been recording and sharing a list of the books that he has read, and films that he has watched. The writers at Flavorwire noted Soderbergh's decision to watch Raiders of the Lost Ark in black & white three times, and have compiled a list of color films that work better in monochrome.

Vexed Ex Libris

Help me prune my book collection! I have over a thousand books and really need to slim it down. I'd like to reduce the book count by at least one hundred but can't seem to do it. Many have sat unread for years. In the past, I've said to myself that I'll read them 'someday' as an excuse for keeping them around. I'm fooling myself. What process, criteria or rule of thumb should I use to help me prune my library, overcome the (admittedly) irrational tome attachment, and make my collection a plum size once more.

Tell me about a time when you were on the receiving end of a truly romantic act.

I'm looking for stories from folks, especially ladyfolks, who have been on the receiving end of random acts of romance. Tell me, when were you surprised by a romantic act? What was it? What were the circumstances?

Highly Specific Guilty Pleasurefilter: What are your favorite coming-of-age movies about (broadly-defined) "alt" people in their 20s? Preferably not rom-coms. Bonus for being set in a New Englandy-type place in autumn. (Artiness, seriousness, etc. totally optional.)

A hundred things you should read

(About) 100 fantastic pieces of journalism from the editor of the Atlantic. Some stuff has been posted here before, but there is much that is new. So read about: The man who broke the Price is Right, horrifying Argentine ant invasions (warning: features description of ants in a California home that will creep you out for a long time to come), the ethics of cloning Neanderthals, the rise of the order of Assassins, why Holder can't close Gitmo, Hooter's opening in Japan, how a jailhouse lawyer sued himself out of prison, and the reflections of one of the best writers of nonfiction alive. And about 90 other articles, all available online.

Building a personal library for an autodidactic quiz buff

What books can you recommend that do for their subject what 'A Short History of Nearly Everything' does for science i.e. cover a broad topic in an entertaining and engaging way which is easy for the layperson to understand? I am interested in improving my General Knowledge and want to build a little library of similar books covering topics such as art, film, geography, history, literature, music, philosophy etc.

List some specific, widely held, possibly irrational turn-ons.

Catnip to the ladies: Four female friends of mine recently had a conversation about what makes an attractive man. Opinions varied, but in the end, three traits were deemed "universally very hot": riding a motorcycle, building things out of wood, and having been in more than a few fistfights growing up. This baffled me to no end. Help me compile a longer list.

Recommend anonymous, frank, journal-like blogs.

Can anyone recommend any brutally honest, diary/journal blogs? Ones where people talk about most aspects of their lives: emotions, friendships, relationships, sex, hobbies, politics. Ones where the posts are so private that they can only be kept secret, or shared with strangers.

Talkin blues recommendations a la Corb Lund?

I've recently discovered Corb Lund. Turns out there's a name for the style of country I like called 'talkin' blues' (I also like his stripped-down sound). I despise 'new' country. Can anyone recommend other artists that have a similar style? (old obvious choices also welcome, I'm country-illiterate)
