MeFi post: "I Want This Goddamn Thing Repaired!"
Some years ago I needed to talk to Thompson for an article. I cadged his home number from a friend of a friend, who would not give it over until after he had spent fifteen minutes warning me about how a call to Hunter was likely to unfold. Hunter will probably be drunk. Hunter will be angry, or unintelligible. Hunter will ask you to send him something odd, or send him money. Hunter will ask you to come to his house to fix something that’s broken. Hunter will almost certainly not answer your... [more]

Posting a chatlog between two friends as an interview is ridiculous.

Interesting. I really enjoyed it, I just didn't think of it as a I Ask/You Answer sort of formal thing. It seems appropriate to The Awl which I think is a blog. So... makes sense given the format. The thing that makes this all interesting to me is that, besides the fact that Choire and Paul are both MeFites, that they're friends and so talking informally. Paul's got a certain amount... [more]

Old media: one person who has little-to-no professional experience with his topic talks to a bunch of people he's identified as (i) having professional experience with the topic and (ii) willing to talk with him. This person then takes all of their opinions, swirls them around in his/her head, carefully constructs a piece of writing that frames the issues in the way that s/he understands them. S/he then has an editor either (i) change the 'their's to 'there's and/or (ii) changes the meaning of... [more]

MeFi post: What's in a name?
Used to be men were men and women were women, and a man could call something whatever he wanted, and language was short. Terse. Manly.

A dog was a dog. Not a "labrador" or a "pavilion." Men were "sirs" and women were "ma'ams." People caught germs, not "e. coli" or "H1N1." Presidents had names like "Nixon," not made up garbage like "Obama."

Now, liberals are... [more]

So this is six years old.

It would probably cost a lot less than $20 to see Busta Rhymes these days.

And a lot more to see Les Paul.

MeFi post: A world in which knowledge is always a double edged sword
Yeah, I'm flagging this, too. A pdf download on some scummy, skeezy site that I've never heard of which seems to be trying to replicate itself the moment I go there? Why would this make a good FPP? Isn't this particular pdf linked somewhere that doesn't stink of rotting flesh?

And is a single rough script for a TV show that I've seen already really worth a post, either?

I admit that I'm probably biased because this is the billionth time... [more]

I like how the article's writer gets more and more modest the further I read. Without giving it away, the best part is at the end, where the viral ad campaign cures global warming, treats cancer and wins a Nobel Prize for Literature.

MeFi post: You don't want to meet these guys in a dark alley that's for sure
Whoever excessively talks about the grandiose beauty of nature needs to watch this video on a loop for a few hours.

What, you have a problem with the ravenous predator staring at you with their huge black eyes framed in a white death-mask, bobbing back and forth on spindly, impossible legs? Their eyes forever watching and judging with cool and remote intelligence? Waiting for a moment of weakness to pounce and tear with bony wings and powerful claws?

I'm prepared to forgive the occasional bit of plagiarism, but there comes a point when someone has replicated so much content that it's time to invite Deckard to the retirement party.

Hmm, you can pass HTML through the search and it displays it. A non-malicious example. Note: it won't work if you have No Script running.

I personally don't know what someone could do with that, but it seems insecure. And lazy.

How quickly a franchise can fall into disarray when the original creative minds behind it move on.

A little history lesson:

Konami pioneered the Music/Rhythm game market through its Bemani division and the series of games it produced: Beatmania, Dance Dance Revolution, GuitarFreaks, DrumMania and more. The trademarks of the series were its emphasis on the reproduction of music and its use of non-standard inputs as a way of playing the game: a... [more]

Oh. My. God. The amount of uninformed, alarmist crap in the FPP article is astounding. Let me give one small example. I spent four years as an economist at the BLS, in the office responsible for researching methodologies for calculating the CPI. I worked on the article's principle target: hedonic adjustments to the CPI. The CPI uses code I wrote to make hedonic adjustments. So I feel somewhat qualified in saying that the article is just plain wrong in its criticism of hedonic adjustments -... [more]
