It's cute until you have to rip the tape off. Please don't try that at home...

Fpp are getting weaker and weaker... This one gets my vote for the worst.

I thought it was well worthy.

I'd like to take the high road snark, make some disparaging comment re. Metafilter turning into "America's Funniest Home Videos", but damn it, maybe it's my dislike of felines, or the opportunity to make bad puns around the concept of the taped up pussy, but it was funny.

"If you got a cat, you have to try this out!"

No you don't. As ae4rv points out, pulling the tape off will not be fun for your cat.

Right with you on your verdict Keith, I so wanted to dislike this link, but it was just too funny. As for hurting the cat, use masking tape that has a low tack, not duct tape or something like that. Hell, cats don't consider the suffering when they are pulling butterflies wings off for fun!

Then use someone elses feline :o)

Cats also shit in a box. Do you? I don't think holding yourself to the standards of an animal with a brain the size of a walnut is a good idea.

i'm totally doing this. my cat is a pain in the ass, its about time he entertained me.

Whether or not removing the tape actually hurts the cat (and I imagine that any tape strong enough to produce the desired effect would yank out at least a little fur), this is cruel. I am usually the last person to complain about such things (I am, pretty much, a prick), but you just don't do this to a cat. Or any animal. Put a goofy hat on it, maybe lure it into a paper bag and then carry it around for awhile, but don't mess with it like this. I can't explain why, but this just strikes me as very wrong.

In conclusion, "Shovel to the Head"=teh funni. This=teh crool.

Take a look around the Blennus site. You might find something funnier.

"Put a goofy hat on it, maybe lure it into a paper bag and then carry it around for awhile"

Yeah, that's sounds kinda funny, but not "putting bottle caps on its' feet, attached with your sisters' retainer rubber bands and setting it free on a hardwood floor" upriotous funny.

That's comedy.

That's not the stuck up pussy video I was expecting to see. I was expecting to see this one. (I promise it's feline, but it might not be safe for work.)
posted by emelenjr at 12:36 PM on October 20, 2004

Yeah, this looks like it hurts the cat. With the tape on it's belly, it walks very gingerly, like someone might walk with duct tape on their privates.

I just tried this with low-stick edging tape. She doesn't care unless its on her paws, and then she just flips it off.

But scotch tape on her paws drives her nuts. I know from experience. She runs when the gift wrap comes out.

If you ask me really nicely I might.

I was so hoping it was going to be a cat taped to the ceiling.

But this was funny. Didn't look as cruel as I imagined before I clicked the link.

But the guy falling down was lauded and applauded? Sometimes this place confuses me terribly. (IMO, as FPPs neither of them constitued "the best of the web".)

This is disgusting and cruel. I can't believe anyone would think this is funny.

the few comments i saw before watching the footage had me cringing right after the tape went on because i was expecting it to be waxed and then cruelly ripped off. but nothing like that happened it was pretty cute its not like they used duct tape or waxed stips. there are plenty of tapes out there that wouldnt cause much dicomfort as far as pulling hairs. the cat was just a little freaked out like cats get. some people around metafilter have a lot of things stuck up there asses but somehow still manage to shit all over threads and ruin the place.

Absolutely fucked up argument, pardon my vehemence. To purposefully inflict discomfort on another creature for entertainment in this form is an exclusively human trait, and it's called sadism. Yes, cats sometimes kill things without eating them, but they are acting out of instinct. We have no other excuse except boredom.
posted by moonbird at 3:23 PM on October 20, 2004

Are you saying that sadism isn't a human instinct, moonbird? History seems to differ with you, there.

Also, is it possible that nobody here has ever done this (totally harmless) trick with their cat before?

Perhaps you should read more about rhesus monkeys.

Infanticide also is a trait that comes up in several different species, if you want to follow up the human behavior = bad, natural behavior = good argument to its logical conclusion...

Hurt cats? Pshaw. Taking the tape off didn't hurt it. Most of the hair coming off would be shedding hair.

The three videos in this thread have to be 3 of the funniest cat videos I've ever seen. Even beats that "karate kitten" one. Effin' Hy-larious!

(I have two cats.)

emelenjr - wow! I'd've thought cats would have masturbated with their tongues. Who knew?

FPP video isn't terrible.

Just for the record, we kill and eat animals smarter than cats. I think a little duct-tape entertainment is miles better than the alternative.
posted by majcher at 2:38 PM on October 22, 2004

For the record, I've even stuck *duct* tape to my cat, and it didn't even so much as meow when I took it off. The lazy bastard won't even get up and play with string or anything. I was hoping it might do *SOMETHING*, but nope. Not even this gets it going.

BTW: When taking off the duct tape, I didn't feel the usual resistance you get when pulling a band-aid from a person, for example. So, no, it doesn't hurt the thing. Unless it makes them fall into a trance like sleep, like my cat. That might be bad.

So, to all the naysayers out there -- NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH :-P
