Have a Bowl of Cereal, Make a Bowl of Gut Chutney.

The latest All-Bran commercial really pushes out the product's virtues, although not without making a stink. Personally, I still prefer a heaping bowl of Colon Blow.

Teen saves life, with help from Mythbusters.

Paging asavage, congratulations are in order. Thanks to quick thinking and an episode of Mythbusters, 14-year-old Julian Shaw saves a man from death by train. "[As the train roared past] the noise pierced your ears and there was a suction that pulled us in… I'd seen that on MythBusters, so I stayed right back and pulled Mark back towards me."

San Francisco bar for a medium-sized party

I need a great San Francisco bar for a party with 30-50 friends on a Friday night, but I don't want to pay to rent one out. This means either a bar that doesn't get insanely crowded on Fridays, or a bar that'll reserve a back room for free. Dive bars are fine, close to Bart is vital (e.g. Mission, Soma, Financial District). Prefer a good beer selection. Does such a beast exist?

Ron Paul Spam

When Ron Paul email spam started hitting inboxes in late October, UAB Computer Forensics Directory Gary Warner published findings on the spam's textual patterns and the illicit botnet used to spread it -- findings which were picked up by media outlets and tech websites like Salon, Ars Technica, and Wired Magazine's "Threat Level" blog, the latter in a set of followup posts by writer Sarah Stirland: 1, 2, 3.

Vietnam vs. Cuba

I am an American citizen. If I want to travel to Vietnam, all I need is a valid passport and visa; if I want to travel to Cuba, I either have to sign up for a special tour, be part of some pre-approved humanitarian/scientific/educational group, or be willing to break U.S. law. I know that there are extralegal ways for U.S-ians to travel to Cuba; this is not my main question.

.99999...=1

No, I'm sorry, it does. There are some arguments that never end. John or Paul? "Another thing coming" or "Another think coming?" But none has the staying power of "Is 0.999999...., with the 9s repeating forever, equal to 1?" A high school math teacher takes on all doubters. Round 2. Round 3. Refutations of some popular "They're not equal" arguments. Refutations, round 2. You don't have to a mathematician to get in on the fun: .99999=1 discussed on a conspiracy theory website, an Ayn Rand website (where it is accused to violating the "law of identity"), and a World of Warcraft forum. But never, as far as I can tell, on MetaFilter.

Winemaking

Jack Keller's winemaking site has not only the basics of home winemaking in 5 parts [12345], but also information on more advanced topics, including acidity, blending, and using a hydrometer. Equally interesting is his extensive collection of recipes for making wines out of things other than grapes, including dandelions and other edible flowers, wild plants (including nettles!), cabbages and beets, tea and coffee, mint, pomegranates, and pumpkins. A complete list of recipes is here, if you'd like to click through alphabetically, and a list of specially-requested recipes is here (scroll down a bit).

How to make our around the world trip more meaningful?

My wife and I (Well traveled Americans both in our mid thirties) quit our jobs in the summer and have been traveling for the last 3 months on the first leg of a year long around the world (or as much of it as we could fit in) trip. So far everything has been great. We have seen incredible things and are having an overall wonderful time, but recently we have been feeling that something is missing.

COW! ON! AMERICA! Cows have invaded America! Until the 1850s cows had invaded our families and now they want back in! They dominate our roadways! Who can escape their mystical dancing, their skills at running, their mastery of computers, and their lovely parades. They plot our destruction, corrupt our children with fan clubs and feed on the living. They even went global! When will the maddness end???

Van Halen Off Key

The worst sounding thing ever? Van Halen, on a show of their reunion tour in North Carolina, attempting to match up their pre-recorded background synths for "Jump" with their live instruments & vocals. The pre-recorded material is accidentally being played back at a higher pitch, approximately 1.5 semitones sharp of the key from the guitar/vocals.
