Ask MeFi post: Books or websites for basic woodworking projects?
Hi, former junior high school wood-shop teacher here.

When people say they want to get into woodworking, they are like the person in the Jack Frost poem, where two roads diverge in a wood. Down the first path is way of the serious woodworker, who will amass in a shop a series of large equipment pieces necessary to the work of what is essentially a hobby cabinet maker-- table saw, jointer, mitre saw, planer, belt sander, glue-up rig, and so on. The traditional first... [more]

Ask MeFi post: 🐝 🐝 How to remove an insect nest from a grill?
Rural Texas native here, have dealt with this stuff often. First I think it's beyond reason to deal with any wasps, period, if you're allergic. Wasps are nothing to mess around with and you need to have someone else do this or hire an insect exterminator. I'm prepared to take the stings when I deal with a nest.

For non allergic people: for removal of an unknown-sized nest, you need to do this at night when the wasps are dormant. Wear dark, loose fitting, long sleeves,... [more]

MeFi post: Lede-Buried Voicemails from Your Mom
Oh, Jesus, my mother is so bad about this. She frequently either buries the lede or just jumps in the middle of a story. Years ago my father was in an accident. This is the voicemail I got:

Mom: Hey sweetie. Hope everything is going well, sorry we missed you. I just want you to know that the doctor thinks Daddy should be just fine. He's recovering well and seems to be awake now. 'Kay. Call me when you get in on my cell. I don't think I'll go home until they release him.... [more]

Similar, here in rural England. A few months ago I was in a village, for their fete, where I'd been to a church harvest festival back in the autumn of 2014. Two elderly women were chatting next to the early season vegetables. No idea of their names (and that's probably wise), so will call them Edith (the obviously frank one) and Mary (the quieter and more tactful one).

Edith: You look a bit familiar.
Me: I was here a few autumns back for the harvest festival.... [more]

Ask MeFi post: 15 month old with very limited repertoire of sounds/syllables
Hi! If you are in the US, you should contact your local Early Intervention Program. They can come in and do an assessment and determine if your child would benefit from services through them. It's a free-to-you program exactly for this purpose, and if your child should need services, through this program she would be eligible until the age of 3.

Whenever parents or caregivers have doubts of this sort, I always recommend going through the motions of evaluations because... [more]

Make sure you get the edges of the door. You'll probably want to take it off its hinges to finish it. If the previous person didn't do, say, the bottom of the door, that could be a mess later.

Ask MeFi post: Make-ahead, but only halfway, chili?
Slow cookers will not get a frozen block of food to 140F within 2 hours, which is what needs to happen to keep your food safe to eat. The USDA has an explainer on how much time your food can safely spend above 40F and below 140F.

What I'd do:

1. Cook your meat and aromatics completely ahead of time, then divide into batches and freeze.

2. ~48 hours before you want to eat your chili, move a batch of... [more]

These are pretty amazing.

I have a great post-partum shot that I'm never allowed to share. Our second daughter, Rose, was born in the car on our way to the hospital. Labor for our first daughter, June, had taken nearly 36 grueling hours, and the second time around my wife was determined to stick it out without any meds (because she had done that thing that so many moms do where she got an epidural and then beat herself up for years afterwards for being some kind of weak... Ask MeFi post: Surprise dinner in the office fridge: nice gesture or too creepy?
As an added thought: once you have provided her with dinner, you can say "I thought about sneaking it into your work fridge as a happy surprise, but I wasn't sure if you'd love that kind of surprise or hate it, so I went with asking first." That will both demonstrate respect for her as a person and prompt a conversation in which she tells you if she likes/hates surprises, likes/hates bringing her personal life into work, likes/hates the idea of you investigating her online, etc.

MeFi post: The Taylor Compressor
Somebody pointed out once that since you can build one of these with nothing more than masonry and a bit of pipe, and since you can use a simple mechanical device to split a compressed air stream into hot and cold, with just a tiny bit of modern knowledge the ancient Romans could have had air conditioning. It's within the reach of Iron Age technology.

Just in case any of y'all are working on some alternate history.

MeFi post: The Rise of Baking Powder
Baking with yeast is SO weather dependent if you don't have central heating and climate control. I can bake reliably when the weather is too hot, because then the yeast will rise although the heat in the kitchen when I bake will make me sick at the end of the day, or I can bake when the weather is really cold and there is heat on in the house and I can find a warm spot next to heat to leave the dough raising. But baking in the mid-season is catch as catch can because I can never predict how long... [more]

Tapeface! I love Tapeface!

There was a guy with a theremin who made it a couple rounds last year. It's the weird acts I always like the best -- the singers and dancers are often the most professional, but you just don't get to see a lot of ventriloquists and jump-ropers and theremin players and mimes and contortionists and baton-twirlers and so on in the regular course of things, so I like those.

Ask MeFi post: Do sneezes freeze in cold weather?
As I recall from a few half-rememberd experiences at the South Pole, sneezing without a face covering in the -70s F isn't too exciting. The water vapor in your exhaled breath turns to fog, but it slows down pretty quickly and rises just like a normal breath. The droplets probably freeze, but that doesn't really change their behavior visibly. It's less neat looking than just exhaling a lung full of air quickly. But, I've never watched someone else sneeze in such weather. (& it never occurred... [more]

OK, so my family has a Meyer Lansky story as well. Crazy right? It's also a Nazi punching story and a weird marriage story, so I guess I'm just going to put it all here.

So, my grandfather, originally named Istvan, was in Europe in the 1930s. He was from the Buda side of Budapest. Hungary was not a particularly friendly place for the Jews, but even unfriendlier was Germany, where my grandfather somehow ended up in 1938 trying to get on board a ship in Hamburg headed for... One project has given me a special satisfaction that no others have: the Star Trek Pez Menorah 3.0.

Backstory:

One year I threw together a quick and dirty Star Trek Pez Menorah (STM) 1.0. (There are only eight Pez in the set so I had to improvise a shamish and Crow was the closest sci-fi thing I had on hand!) At some point my then-BF had the idea to hack the Menorah using a DIY LED Menorah kit (and replacing Crow) and the... [more]
