Oh WOW this will be bad!

Today I find myself in a precarious situation. I am a college student who happens to live in a four bedroom apartment with two other guys; however, I have discoverd that one of my roommates is flying his internet girlfriend in from Alaska on Saturday morning so that they can live together (The story gets better/worse - they developed their relationship through playing Warcraft).

Index of Medieval Medical Images

Index of Medieval Medical Images Searchable collection of medieval illustrations (to the year 1500); the thumbnails can be viewed at varying magnifications. There are many more interesting online repositories devoted to the history of medical illustration--both medieval and early modern--including Historical Anatomies on the Web, Anatomia, Seeing is Believing, and Medieval Manuscripts in the National Library of Medicine.

Outting Users

Hey, MeFite Detectives! A request: Please think before you "out" someone. In our personal lives, most of us have learned that just because we can do something, it doesn't necessarily mean we should, and the same is true here. If a user (or perhaps the subject of a post, etc.) has caught your attention for some reason, and they have revealed (or you have figured out) their real life identity, and you go poking around to see what you can find, please think twice before publishing your big scoop. a self-linking double post callout

You know, there ought to be a rule (or at least social approbation) against a self-linking double post callout. It seems like it's OK to link to previous comments, but one should let a third party make the DP call.

Who writes your favourite light verse?

Ogden Nash made quite a splash. And somewhat darker, Dottie Parker. Silverstein was near divine, And all revere old Edward Lear. But now I suffer from a curse: My thirst for rhyme has grown perverse! I need a doctor or a nurse; My problem is becoming worse. So lest I end up in a hearse, Please point me t'wards some more light verse!

Shoutouts to FuzzyVerde

I just wanted to publicly thank FuzzyVerde, who actually delivered three tubs of ice cream to my pregnant sister today for her birthday (complete with festive cooler). The idea that a complete stranger halfway around the world would offer to help me out is just amazing. I love MeFites!

"The joy of eternal bards/ the sound of the kantele"

The kantele is the national instrument of Finland, strongly associated with traditional Finnish folk music. A psaltery-like string instrument of somewhat obscure origin, it prominently figures in the Kalevala. Despite this association with the past, the kantele is very much a living instrument- it was used in the soundtrack to "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" for its "pure, chilly sound", and electric kanteles have been made. Mrs. Robinson has an anima projection

I am a 41 year old female, recently attracted to a man about a dozen years younger than me. It did not start out as an attraction, but a work relationship that turned into an attraction and featured a lot of mutual flirting. This man started showing up in my -for lack of a better word-psychic space, the part of my brain used to process creative ideas and artistic projects. He showed up as a tuning fork, which sent me on an internet search on just what a tuning fork is and does (I am not a musician). The effect his presence was having on me was stunning. It transcends mere attraction, it was, I believe, an anima projection (a term I found after leaving the employment situation where we both worked). There was a piece of me that started to unfold, expand, absorb, and just flowered. I felt amazing and beautiful creative and calm. I left the job and therefore the daily interaction stopped. I did not see this man on my last day, and didn't hear from him. Two weeks after leaving the job, I sent him a note expressing my feelings and that whatever it was (pretty impossible to explain, really--"gee ,dude, I think you are my muse") felt important, and I have heard nothing.

The Curious Case of Jim Thompson

When American expat, Thai silk king, and former OSS (now CIA) agent James H.W. Thompson disappeared without a trace in the highlands of Malaysia on Easter 1967, he left behind a remarkable house in Bangkok, a major silk exporting company, and a lot of questions. There are many theories about his disappearance, but there's little evidence to support any of them.

Geek Life, Illustrated

Mike Russell's CulturePulp is a rare example of journalism through comics. Driven by a love of obsessive, slightly geeky subcultures, the Portland-based reporter/cartoonist offers probing answers to such vital questions as Are pirates the new ninjas? What would Tom Jones do? How do you feed a penguin? And which donut shop is best-suited for a voodoo-themed wedding

Modern Ruins Photo Gallery

There have been a number of urban exploration or modern ruins photography posts here over the years, but I couldn't find any that linked to my new favorite modern ruin site, opacity.us. With 85 galleries of subjects as gorgeous as Bannerman's Arsenal and as haunting as the Verden Psychiatric Hospital, it's a treasure trove of entropy on film.

"Awesome."

Kid Radd is a sprite comic. Wait, don't roll your eyes and start work on that snarky comment. It is, actually, good. It tells the light-hearted and philosophical tale of a self-aware video game sprite. Original art, and bits of animation. Read, watch, enjoy.

Metafilter census

I say we have an official MetaFilter census. It would be interesting to see where MeFites stand in terms of things like Race, Location, Religious Beliefs, etc. It would be entirely voluntary and anonymous of course. Any thoughts on this?

This thread is a disaster.

This thread is a disaster. It has such a long pissing match in it that advances nothing that I simply cannot see going click-click-click all the way through the noise to flag each off-topic post. I feel like I need a button for "there's so many violating posts in this thread I cannot possibly flag them all individually and still have time for 3 squares and 8 hours of sleep in a day." [mi]

Kirkaracha Love

Kudos to kirkaracha for dodging the urge to be clever and actually making the text of his link to IMDB the name of the movie. Rather than content free nouns, adverb or adjectives. "Honey, I've got a tool that'll fix anything." -- Actor in this sequel would have been less useful.
