Getting into grad school...late.

I recently turned 30 and have been regretting the fact that I never got my Master's. Now that I have been out of college for about 8 years, how do I go about getting back in?

Interview with a Hedge Fund Manager

n+1: Is this your actual office? It’s so small.
HFM: Yes. I don’t actually spend much time in here, I have a desk out on the trading floor so this is just for, you know, meetings or phone calls I can’t take out of the desk, or interviews with literary magazines that I do every Wednesday at 4pm.

Super Epic Video Game News

Super Epic Video Game News. Several Channel 101 alumni are bringing their own distinctive style to game and tech journalism. Perfect for those who love video games, but hate the people that play them. The YouTube comments are an even split between impotent rage and people who get the joke.

Is "Human Resources Manager" really a great job or is Money magazine lying to me?

1. Great Idea 4. Profit! Help with 2 and 3, please.

I've been playing with a promising idea for a website for a while, and I feel I'm ready to get things moving. I've got a fairly clear idea of what I want, who would use it, and why it would take off. Income would be ad-generated, in an area where I believe prospects are good. The problem is, there's no out-of-the-box software that does what I need it to do, and programming the site is beyond my capabilities.

How can I convince myself I'm not a failure if I give up on my career and just get a "job"?

I have a “career” right now and I’m sick of it and the industry. I want to go back to having a “job” that pays me enough to live. But I don’t think I’ve truly reconciled things in my head. How do I reconcile within myself that I’m not a failure if I give up on my career and chosen industry and go get a job doing…something?

Format and topics to cover in a business plan?

I'm looking for ~$10,000 to start a simple business and need to write a business plan. Essentially, I have the best price and the best quality for a new tech gadget than no one is seriously marketing in the US. I'm trying to figure out the business plan's formatting, what topics to cover, questions to answer, information to include. Any samples or suggestions are much appreciated.

Advantage: San Francisco

A few years ago I saw a funny, tongue-in-cheek blog post comparing San Francisco and New York. It judged each city in a number of categories, with a description of how each fared. It would always be obvious that New York should win, but in the conclusion it would go to San Francisco for some backwards reason. [half-remembered example after the jump]

But what about the platypi?

It's hard to believe that, back before the Internet but after the first edition of Dungeons of Dragons, there was a time when we had no easy way to pool the world's knowledge of evolutionary biology, lizard genetics, Pern, and martians to answer that most pressing question: should male RPG fans draw female humanoids descended from dragons with ginormous racks, or without?

Ondes Martenot, or, When Maurice Met Leon.

When Maurice Martenot met Lev Sergeivich Termen in the early 1920's and heard his revolutionary new musical instrument the Theremin, he was inspired to create his own electroacoustic instrument , which he christened Ondes Martenot. Next year will mark the 80th anniversary of the first performance of this remarkable hybrid keyboard which, aside from its lovely and ethereal sound, is also aesthetically pleasing visually, with its handsome collection of multiple speakers. See and hear the instrument being played and explained in this video interview and demonstration by Jean Laurendeau, which closes with a lovely rendition of the theme from Star Trek. And, here's the instrument in use, live, alongside who else? Radiohead.

Staring at My Spaceship

I get to perform this as part of my set at Blip Festival in NYC next week - essentially the Woodstock of chiptunes / 8-bit / video game music.
This was written out of intense affection for my EVE Online playing nerd girl (a soft orchestral arrangement of it is going to be our wedding processional, awww) and was released on 8bitpeoples' 8BP050 compilation CD. I've spruced it up with some orchestration for the show. Come rock with me if you're local -- I'd love to meet my fellow mefimusicians and introduce more people to the chiptune scene. It's pure love and fun.

Hey, Look at This!

Exhibitionism can refer to a wide range of behaviours, ranging from fun with a willing partner, to a crime when done to the unsuspecting and unwilling. As a clinical matter exhibitionism is a sexual paraphilia in which a person (usually a man) obtains sexual pleasure from exposing his or her genitals to strangers, usually in a public place. Prevalence of the condition in the general population is not known, but approximately 30% of sex offenders have exhibitionistic tendencies and it is one of the most common sex offences. Some argue that for people with this paraphilia "it should be a possible to exist happily as an exhibitionist and still stay within the boundaries imposed by our legal systems." While often the belief is that they are harmless, research is indicating that they may progress to more serious crimes. Others note that "exhibitionism...is dangerous in that it can produce traumatic experiences within its victims."

China Miéville says libertarianism's all at sea

Remember the Freedom Ship? (Previously). Well, it's still no nearer reality. China Miéville reckons it's due to the fact that it's a perfect example of the libertarian fantasy. Some libertarians take issue with his portrayal of the movement. Meanwhile the serious seasteaders think he must be talking about someone else. Maybe one of these guys?

The Worst Mayor In America

He once stopped a school bus on a busy interstate because he “needed a hug” from the kids inside. He’s been known to strap weapons to his chest and leg that he has no authority to carry or conceal, then wear them in public. He once bulldozed an elderly woman’s house, promising to build her a better one. He then forgot to build it. He recruited a team of kids to torch a row of dilapidated shotgun houses, without clearance or first turning off the utilities. Meet The Worst Mayor In America.
