MeFi post: It airs right after "Teen Mom"
I think there's something here I'm not quite getting. Is this one of those "You have to be an upper-income, single careerist to understand" things?

Maybe? To me, it's a pitch-perfect satire of the attitude you hear in some circles in New York (and elsewhere, I'm sure) that having a baby "too young" can RUIN YOUR LIFE!!!11!!! - and "too young" is anything under 35.

On preview, hurdy gurdy girl nails it.

I get the impression that she's sunk a lot of money, and probably amassed a decent amount of debt, trying to get a stand alone museum set up for the collection and now she is forced into selling the whole thing to stave off severe financial issues.

Yeah, that's the impression I got, too, reading the article about the auction more closely. Too bad. Hopefully the auction ends up being a windfall for her and solves any financial issues she built up... [more]

I'll be very curious to hear how much she makes on everything once the auction is over. She has some truly amazing pieces that I imagine collectors will be falling all over themselves to acquire.

Yup, sounds like he's mad at you, and is waiting for you to run after him to make this all better, like you have in the past. Don't even bother this time. Good friends don't treat their friends this way.

Do not, do not, do not buy your brother a car. A car is just a band-aid at this point. If you want to help them out financially, buy needed items for the kids.

I think that it is part of the job description, as a father, to embarass your offspring.

By the time my daughter got to high school she'd pretty much trained us to avoid contact with her when she was at school, or other social settings.

My job in this town takes me to all the schools, and I followed this rule pretty much. Teens being teens, she did not show much appreciation for my restraint.

Then one busy Friday, as I... [more]

Me...well, I love this guy.

The world's rife with desaturated, lifeless, dutiful dads who say "I love you" all the time as they work their way through the chore of being a parent with the same enthusiasm of someone working on a quarterly report. I used to sort of envy those dads, the patient Hugh Beaumonts in the neighborhood who just sort of did dad stuff without the extremes, but times change.

My dad was horrifying.... [more]

I am well aware that people will not believe this story, but it is absolutely true.

I just recently was appointed to represent a female named "Le-a."

I looked at the name and contemplated how it was to be pronounced. I figured it was likely either "lee-uh" or "lay-uh." I thought there was an outside chance that it was pronounced "lee" or "lee-ay."

When my secretary... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How to help a student SO dress better?
Have you talked with her about her clothes? If you've been together a year and a half and you live together, I think you should be able to say to each other, "Honey, I love you, but that outfit is not working." Having a reason helps- "Snow pants aren't really appropriate for Le French Bistro. How about your grey slacks instead?" Like others have mentioned above, having taste is totally not contingent on your shopping budget, so I don't think buying her new clothes is the... [more]

Engagement is not a time period when you should be ironing things out. If your relationship as it will be when you get married isn't solid, you should not propose just so you can have a "show stopper" engagement. I assume you'll be living together after you get married? If the two of you don't have a plan for that yet, I think engagement should definitely be postponed.

MeFi post: Are We There Yet?
I don’t have a whole lot of concrete experience with eightysomethings and above, but what I feel from them is joy. Simple joy, quiet joy. When I think of eightysomethings the mental image is of a large, radiant smile, wrinkled and soft. A smile that’s had a lot of practice being a smile.

I do know a good number of eightysomethings. What I "feel" from them is frustration with their failing health. One of the ladies at church always says,... [more]

If you know for 100% sure that you'll be leaving in July, tell them now.

What? Heck no. Do not. DO NOT. It's April. You do not know what life will bring 4 months from now. Maybe the move won't happen! And come on, they don't need 4 months to hire and replace you (unless they absolutely do and you know they'll actually use every day of it instead of marching you and your box of stuff to the curb). Are you Facebook friends? For a low-level, platonic, keeping tabs sort of relationship with an Ex, Facebook can be helpful. Just friend him and see what happens. Say "Happy Birthday" once a year and comment on a picture once in a blue moon.

I don't think my personal love for this company is getting in the way when I say that this is a great website. All the important stuff is right there on the front- here are the shows, here's a link for audition info, here's the address and phone number- and it's pretty to look at, too.

Ask MeFi post: How do I start saving money now that I'm actually making it
You should open 2 accounts- a savings account for emergencies (some say to have 3-6 months living expenses), big purchases, etc, and if your company does not offer a 401(k), a retirement investment account- for someone your age, a Roth IRA invested in a Target Date retirement fund (like this, 2055 is probably the year for you) would be appropriate.

Plenty of people post questions that are even lesser questions than hers, they're just better at disguising it. "Has anyone ever had to have their dog spayed twice, and how did it go?" seems question enough for me.

Ask MeFi post: turn this into a (lazy person's) crockpot recipe!
The carrots, celery, etc, you definitely don't have to saute first. Someone who knows chard better than I do will have to speak to that, but I don't think so- I've done collard greens in my slow-cooker, no problem. I think you just have to throw it all in and keep an eye to make sure it doesn't dry out too much, which can be prevented by not overcooking, not taking the lid off the slow cooker while it cooks, and maybe adding a little bit more liquid at the end if needed.
