I think there's something here I'm not quite getting. Is this one of those "You have to be an upper-income, single careerist to understand" things?

Maybe? To me, it's a pitch-perfect satire of the attitude you hear in some circles in New York (and elsewhere, I'm sure) that having a baby "too young" can RUIN YOUR LIFE!!!11!!! - and "too young" is anything under 35.

Have you talked with her about her clothes? Engagement is not a time period when you should be ironing things out. If your relationship as it will be when you get married isn't solid, you should not propose just so you can have a "show stopper" engagement. I assume you'll be living together after you get married? If the two of you don't have a plan for that yet, I think engagement should definitely be postponed.

You should open 2 accounts- a savings account for emergencies (some say to have 3-6 months living expenses), big purchases, etc, and if your company does not offer a 401(k), a retirement investment account- for someone your age, a Roth IRA invested in a Target Date retirement fund (like this, 2055 is probably the year for you) would be appropriate.

The carrots, celery, etc, you definitely don't have to saute first. Someone who knows chard better than I do will have to speak to that, but I don't think so- I've done collard greens in my slow-cooker, no problem. I think you just have to throw it all in and keep an eye to make sure it doesn't dry out too much, which can be prevented by not overcooking, not taking the lid off the slow cooker while it cooks, and maybe adding a little bit more liquid at the end if needed.
