MeFi post: Behold, I plunge my hands in fire! I feel no heat!
Few foreigners have seen the crater in the heart of the Karakum, one of the world's largest deserts, although Turkmen authorities are hoping to change that as they seek ways to bolster tiny visitor numbers to the former Soviet republic.

Here's a thought; they should build a highway to the crater to improve access. They could call it...well, you know.

(Or else the Bon Scott freeway)

MeFi post: Marilize Leguana
In addition to public sector revenue, for the private sector, there's basically a substantial industry already waiting in the wings and real money is already being spent to build out the infrastructure. The delivery service I use is about to expand to add statewide overnight deliveries. You can be sure that the capitalists funding this have bigger things in mind. These people are already making so much money that it kind of staggers me to do the math on their business even based on some likely... [more]

“Marihuana” is listed in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act alongside some of the most dangerous and mind-altering drugs on earth, ranked as high as heroin, LSD and bufotenine, a highly toxic and hallucinogenic toad venom that can cause cardiac arrest

The way this Congress has performed, I'd expect them to accidentally legalize the toad venom.

Of course, this is the same universe that forced Leia to comfort a grieving Luke Skywalker over the death of an old man he'd known for two days while her entire planet and everyone she'd ever loved was vaporized.

Sounds like the writer does not understand the overwhelming nature of MANPAIN.

I love riffing on old jokes, so I think this is perfect.

Once I was goofing around and told a friend my take on the giant marshmallow joke which is

"Last night I dreamed I ate a giant marshmallow, and when I woke up, my giant marshmallow was missing!"

Turns out his version is way better:

"Last night I ate my pillow"

That was probably the best version of rolling a joke into Joke Explanation territory then all the way back around into funny then over to tragic and then finally ... I mean, man, what a journey.

MeFi post: The death of Eric Garner
The cops job is to get the dude under arrest - no ifs, ands or buts.

The cops' job is to protect people. In theory, they are allowed to use limited force in controlled ways in order to do that job. When force becomes an end in itself, when police become motivated by legitimizing and rationalizing ever-increasing amounts of force rather than minimizing the need for it and the risks of using it, they are hurting rather than protecting us.

Cops across America are using ever-increasing deadly force of one kind or another against people demonstrating even the slightest bit of non-cooperation or hostility of any kind. That includes looking at a cop cross-eyed, at this point. By contrast, check these London cops and how they handled a guy with a freaking machete screaming and charging at them. In the US that obviously mentally disturbed individual would be dead now. He would have died in a... [more]

Ask yourself the three things you must always ask yourself before you say anything:
1. "Does this need to be said?"
2. "Does this need to be said by me?"
3. "Does this need to be said by me now?"

Leviticus is old-covenant. Jesus is new-covenant. I don't thing Jesus people should concern themselves with -- to them -- obsolete documentation.

Jesus was super concerned with economic sin and basically not at all with sexual sin. The only bits in the New Testament that care about what people do with their own bodies is from the Pauline Epistles. The real hermeneutic that Evangelicals seem to follow is whether a given passage allows them to gain in... [more]

"Well designed?" Huh. Struck me as quite the opposite.

I am convinced (and I speak with absolutely zero authority on the subject) that modern web design theory posits that the more time you spend "engaging" with a website, searching for the bit of data you actually want, the better that website must be.

If you could find what you want in 5 seconds, in and out like a convenience store, that would be the... [more]

I think a more interesting question is "why"? You could make a pretty good case for the reason for this being social inequality.
