Country Music: not just for Americans!

German country music. You may remember Texas Lightning from Eurovision 2006, but the rabbit hole goes much deeper than that. Oh yes.

Chess tactics explained in plain English

A Field Guide to Chess Tactics. Chess tactics explained in plain English, with hundreds of examples. A great site for beginning to mid-level players. Includes a large library of positional problems, organized thematically, with the solutions explained and discussed. For example, learn about knight forks, then quiz yourself on the same topic.

DIY High-Speed Book Scanner From Trash and Cheap Cameras.

Wish you had all your books in digital form? Well, for a few hundred bucks and a lot of scrounging, you can do it. I just posted plans for a book scanner that uses cheap digital cameras and (with the help of friends) wrote free software to get all your books into the digital domain. There's a complete tutorial at the link above. Currently the software is a work-in-progress. Here's a sample if you're concerned about quality. We can do a lot more with software -- this is just the most basic treatment with alpha software.

Staring at My Spaceship

I get to perform this as part of my set at Blip Festival in NYC next week - essentially the Woodstock of chiptunes / 8-bit / video game music.
This was written out of intense affection for my EVE Online playing nerd girl (a soft orchestral arrangement of it is going to be our wedding processional, awww) and was released on 8bitpeoples' 8BP050 compilation CD. I've spruced it up with some orchestration for the show. Come rock with me if you're local -- I'd love to meet my fellow mefimusicians and introduce more people to the chiptune scene. It's pure love and fun.

But what do couples actually *do* in the evenings?

Mr LyzzyBee and I have been living together for a good few years. I feel we spend too much time apart on our separate hobbies. He thinks no-one spends that much time together these days, apart from watching TV etc. I think we should come away from the telly and do something where we're interacting with each other. And I don't mean intimate stuff, I mean things to do, fully dressed, downstairs or outside. So - what do established couples, no kids, actually *do* in the weekday evenings?

fat hate is ugly

The overwhelming majority of fat people have made the choice to not do what is necessary to change a situation which is hazardous to their health, wasteful of resources, and visually repellent.

All I am saying, is give posts a chance

At first I was kinda surprised the video in 67602 got dumped on in comments. There is nothing intrinsically bad here. It's actually rather professionally done, it feels very much like something that was produced for television. I strongly suspect the fault here is with the FPP.

Our Thing

The Five Families were established by Charlie "Lucky" Luciano in the wake of the Castellammarese War (1929 - September 10, 1931), a gang war in New York between partisans of Joe "The Boss" Masseria and those of Salvatore Maranzano. The arrangement, under the administration of The Commission, was created to divide the city among the gangs with mutual interests, and prevent the continuous grab for more territory. Of course, the arrangement has been anything but peaceful, and the Five Families have all gone through periods of prosperity and decline. So who are they, and how are they doing now?

The Man Who Pissed Off Hitler

Artist John Heartfield was one of those who recognized the threat of Nazism early on. Remarkably, he created his anti-fascist art inside Germany, until 1933 when Hitler came to power. He continued to pointedly satirize the Reich (and those who made it possible, as his bitter image of the League of Nations illustrates) from exile in Czechoslovakia. The nature of his work makes it very clear that Hitler's goals and intentions were obvious well before the war. (via)

The Right to Bare Arms

The writers for the Late Show with David Letterman have recently had some trouble coming up with jokes about Obama. Perhaps they should take a lesson from the master of Obama jokes, the President himself. President Obama brought down the house at last night's White House Correspondents' Dinner, poking fun at himself, his administration, and everyone else within shouting distance. Host Wanda Sykes followed Obama's show stealing performance with a few choice jabs of her own. Unfortunately, it seems that Dick Cheney's prediction has come true since no one is safe when the Comedian-in-Chief steps up to the mic.

The plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

Experts at WHO and elsewhere believe that the world is now closer to another influenza pandemic than at any time since 1968. WHO uses a series of six phases of pandemic alert... The world is presently in phase 3: a new influenza virus subtype is causing disease in humans, but is not yet spreading efficiently and sustainably among humans. The outbreak of a variant of swine flu led federal officials to close Mexico City-area schools indefinitely - the first such shutdown since a devastating 1985 earthquake.

PoliticsFilter

It's election season, and the stakes are high. The incumbent party is looking a little frayed, and people are looking for change. The opposition leader (a young chap, who despite being neither gifted, nor black, has likened himself to someone of that definition) is accused of profiting from parliamentary questions about undeclared shareholdings. And forget about your $700 Billion, this election has been rocked by scandal over an undeclared NZ$100,000 donation. Some would suggest that the state of the nation can be read largely through sales of doggy chew toys.

How to easily convert DVD's to AVI

I'm moving around a lot. Tired of dragging movie DVD's around. Not looking to make an iso copy (i.e. DVDShrink). Too much disk space. ~750MB avi's would be more ideal, but even as a software developer the options I've Googled are confusing. Is there a simple (i.e.1-button) DVD to AVI converter?

Abraham Holmes

More low quality, drunken Bluegrass with The Failsworth Pilgrims. Recorded the same night we recorded Diamond Joe - only slightly more sober. We always opened our shows with this one because it lends itself to soundchecking so well. Another rough mix, although we did go back later (drunker) and add the super-camp backing vocals

My teeth just took over my life.

ThinningToothEnamelFilter: So my latest trip to the dentist (three weeks ago) was a bit of a nightmare, in which I was told the enamel on my teeth is "very thin". Looking for advice on anything I can do to keep what's left, and (dubious) whether there's any way to get it back, as well as what I can expect from here on just generally. A few questions inside for those who have experienced the same thing, or others who genuinely know anything about the problem.
