MeFi post: "He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation"
I'm all in favor of repeating "Trump" and "impeachment" over and over again. In case anyone asks "impeached? What for?" Here's that draft list of charges we came up with in some of the earlier threads, again... interested if anyone would add anything to this now.

- He is violating the emoluments clause, and as a result is receiving bribes from foreign powers.

- There is evidence that his campaign colluded with Russia... [more]

The middle-of-the-road media outlets are partly to blame for this last week too, as their insistence to treat whether Trump is racist as a matter open to interpretation gives latitude to the worst fucking people.

Is he racist? Well, he says racist things, does racist things, has been sued for racism, is the son of a Klansman, got to office by promising racist policies, is working with racists to enact said racist policies, is overwhelmingly seen as racist by people of... [more]

Judis posits three possible explanations for The Shithead's behaviour: a) That it is all in service of some political strategy of creating some sort of "workers party" based on nationalism, protectionism, and "abandoning political correctness", b) that he is an out-and-out white nationalist/supremacist or c) that he's reverting to childhood.

While I 100% understand why people don't like South Park, and while I do believe its influence is undeniable, I still like it. While Parker, Stone, et al. are by no means immune to being flat-out wrong about a whole bunch of stuff, there is usually a LOT of nuance in there that people on both sides of the argument (that is, the people arguing and the people they're arguing about) either refuse to acknowledge or are unable to see.

On that subject, via The Washington Post:[T]he coal industry employed 76,572 people in 2014, the latest year for which data is available.

That number includes not just miners but also office workers, sales staff and all of the other individuals who work at coal-mining companies.

I will somewhat reluctantly refrain from arguing about context here, not because I don't think it's important, but because I do and I get rather worked up about it as a cultural history buff.

I will instead just suggest that in cases where a song is readily detached from a singular performer or performance, such as we more commonly see today in our era of singer/songwriters, lyrics act much as a playwright's words act to a play. Which is to say they provide an... [more]

Ultimately, this separation is between the two people separating, and sharing the burden of it with their children is rude and irresponsible. From that perspective, I see the father's position of distance and rationality on the subject (assuming he's not bringing it up, just responding to inquiries) to be the appropriate one, and the mother's position of gushing details no kid wants to know to be highly inappropriate.

(I am not disagreeing with you at all.)

It felt more like a bad two-parter with a bigger budget than a movie. Wait. That's all the TNG movies. This isn't some rose-coloured glasses about TOS, though; IV-VI were contemporaneous to TNG. Nemesis is about enslaved captives trapped inside a planet who somehow build themselves a Galaxy-class starship outfitted with next-generation ordnance. After that, literally nothing about Star Trek can bother me. As far as I'm concerned Insurrection is a paragon of logic and continuity.

I did like it better when it starred Paul Sorvino and was shorter.

It pains me that I do have to stop and think which one was Insurrection and which one was Nemesis. I never have to do that with any of the TOS movies, alas. (Although now that Tom Hardy is a much better-known quantity I may need to revisit the latter.) Both just felt like going through the motions, really. What helps me sometimes is perspective. I am in a satisfying romantic relationship and I have a decent social group and I like where I live and like what I do for work. And when I tell people I get lonely they are usually pretty much like "What? Why? Shut up."
