Queries from the hive mind

I was experimenting with Google's search suggestions feature when I noticed that it gave some interesting results for "metafilter + [letter]". Since it returns the most popular search terms starting with that phrase, what you get for each letter is an A-Z listing of the most sought-after topics related to Metafilter. So without further ado, I give you... Metafilter A to Z.

Lost to the internet: A few years ago there was an artist who created porno scenes using fully clothed models. I think i saw it on Mefi, but my search-fu is not strong enough.

In Which I Ruin Rashomon For Everyone, Forever

Trying to "solve" Rashomon is absolutely the stupidest possible way to approach this Kurosawa masterpiece. But diagramming it in a bullheaded attempt to figure it all out... that can only be described as a sensible use of one's time. Now with added Ted Sallis!

How do I process – I never tried to hurt you but I’m sorry if it happened, it wasn’t my intent, it was yours, get out of my life forever?

My question is about intent? If you hurt someone with what you perceive to be their and your best interests in mind, while simultaneously knowing that what you are doing will hurt that person, is it any different than actively trying to hurt the person. Does duration and occurrence play a role? If I don’t mean to hurt you, but know I am and will for 4 years is it less bad than a single act of active hurtfulness? Is it possible to want to hurt someone you love in an extreme moment but still love and care for that person? Is it possible to call that love?

Is my hard drive opaque on a public network?

Wi-Fi security. How much of the contents of my a) iPhone or b) iBook can be "seen" if I'm on a public network? Particularly concerning the latter, I've never been clear whether, in logging on to network X--be it a free municipal net or my employer's "guest net"--I'm simply an inscrutable blip on a network or I'm making my hard drive an open book to anyone who cares to peek. Any insight would be appreciated.

How a Girl From the 'Burbs Became a Drug Kingpin

This is a story I did for the Daily Beast about Rian Thal, a party promoter in Philly who was boldly murdered on a Saturday evening in the luxury apartment complex where she lived. Police found four kilos of cocaine and $100,000 in her apartment. I relate some personal history to shape some understanding of how someone like her could wind up in a place like this.

Ideas for "non-lame" activities for a wedding reception?

Me and the fiancée are getting married on August 1st. The plans for the ceremony are set in stone at this point, but we're still partially in the planning stages for the reception. From the beginning, we've worked hard to avoid the usual wedding clichés. Right now, though, we've got a bit of a planner's block going on. That's why we turn to you for ideas and insights.

Leaving the Ghosts in Peace

When thousands of people depart, leaving an entire city dead that’s a real tragedy. There are mainly two reasons why people leave the place where they used to live for years or even generations: danger, and economic factors. Abandoned Places In The World. ( previously 1,2)

Another "Best of Metafilter" request. So, my grandfather died today (as I anticipated a few months ago), and one of my first reactions is to look to Metafilter for comfort and guidance. I've found a few relevant threads on my own (just taking a cursory glance at ColdChef's posting history helps put death in perspective), but I'd appreciate other mefites' help: what are the most helpful, or comforting, or grounding threads you've read on the site that have to do with death and grieving?

What if it was real?

This question was deleted (and we all figured it would be), but I'm curious: What if it was for real? Did the mods contact the asker? Did he confess to it being a joke? If he said it was a joke, did you believe him? What if he really does have a dead body in his apartment? Do we just say "Oh well" or do the mods try to contact the authorities?

"I have owed too many people..."

Former South Korean president Roh Moo-hyun committed suicide on May 23. The former president jumped from a cliff in his hometown, where he had retired to. A country mourns (video and articles 1, 2), and clashes (more, WSJ), over the legacy of the former human rights attorney who fought for the rights of student protesters and against the corrupt presidencies of the 80s, had his presidency saved by protests and activism in the electronic age, and at the end of his life found himself being investigated for bribery.

What's in a name?

What does your last name mean? This site has a good variety of surnames with etymologies that seem to be trustworthy in general. You may have to try variant spellings; for instance, "Cardoso" comes up empty, but "Cardozo" gives:
Spanish and Portuguese, derived from Cardoso 'place where thistles grew', town or city from which the first bearer moved; also found in the form CARDOZA; made popular by the Sephardim moiety (Spanish-Portuguese group of Jews).
And if your name isn't there, you can try Behind the Name, which depends on submissions from readers and so is spottier, but has (for example) Nixon ("son of Nicholas"), which vitalog omits. Enjoy!
