Start making sense.

I recently watched (and ended up buying) Stop Making Sense, the concert movie of a Talking Heads performance in 1983. What other amazing concert movies are out there?

Make me go from a zero to hero in his life..

I live in Philadelphia. This weekend, I met a guy in Washington DC through a mutual friend. The guy was digging me as the night went on, but he was drunk and we were hanging out with a bunch of friends. Nothing happened. I left for home. How can I see if there is possibly something more?

The Art Of Conversation

How can I cultivate / find deeper conversations with people? In university it was always easy to find people ready to talk about philosophy, politics, psychology, etc. But now, as I have gotten older and supplanted myself into the corporate world, the art of conversation seems to have been lost. It would appear that most people are resigned to talking about kids, jobs, and pop culture. Am I just in the wrong social circles or does this type of small talk permeate our culture? I long to attend a French salon or dinner party whose primary purpose is the art of conversation. Where can I find groups of people who like engaging, face-to-face conversation? How can I steer people away from talking about what they saw on CNN and towards something with a little more substance?

What "Rules for Life" should I pass on to my 15 year old brother?

So I'm putting together a collection of "Rules for Life" as a gift for my 15 year old little brother, that I'll likely put together on one of those one-off vanity book publishery things... and I'm looking for some suggestions as to some good rules. Looking for real advice for obscure situations one might find themselves in, great quotes that can inspire someone to live their life better, serious thoughts that people have realized later in their life that they wish someone had told them previously, and a good dose of humor. Cliche as it is, Mary Schmich's "Wear Sunscreen" column gives a decent examples of the general tone I want for most of it. So.... What else should I put in the book?

Modern, soulful, and Motown-esque

Hook me up with neo-soul, jazzy, Motown-y music with a modern twist in the vein of Raphael Saadiq, Aloe Blacc, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound, Janelle Monae and anyone else awesome.

Music that later makes you go, "Hey yeah, I never noticed that!"

Pop-rock songs with unusual/unique constructions, structures, patterns, tempo changes, time signature changes, instrumental/vocal interplay, etc... Stuff you probably don't realize upon a casual first listen. And not necessarily something obvious like "multiple songs in one" (eg "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"), or songs with no chorus.

Where do the John Does of the world live?

What are some equivalents of "123 Main Street" outside Canada and the US? I'm looking for prototypical exemplar addresses, like you might see used on a sample form, but which are still likely to exist in reality -- so, NOT something like "123 Example Street" or "123 Anystreet." I do realize this exact address format does not apply to all areas of the globe.

All the crazy ladies (don't put a ring on it)

I'm looking for more movies of a specific crazy/independent lady vibe, and this vague vibe spans genre: I want movies about women folk, especially ones with a witty or dark streak. I'm thinking of films like Heathers, Secretary, The Piano, Portrait of a Lady, Virgin Suicides, All About Eve, Winter's Bone and Ghost World. What else should I see?

""You can't forget there are people listening when you say you are going to do things, and I try not to overpromise."

This past March, former US President Bill Clinton acknowledged to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that tariff policies his administration championed in the mid-1990's helped destroy Haiti's rice production and contributed to the impoverished nation's inability to feed itself. But while most of the world has stopped paying attention to Haiti's woes, Mr. Clinton has become the de facto leader of the effort to rebuild it after the catastrophic earthquake this past January. Will his influence be enough? Reports from the UN Office of the Special Envoy to Haiti indicate that the reconstruction progress has been slow.

"Several months ago I wrote a letter to WisDOT requesting your agency consider recalling the vanity license plate IH8GOP that I noticed on a vehicle in the Columbus area. My reason for requesting the recall of this plate is that the message is obscene to those of us who are members of the Republican Party (GOP) and who subscribe to the conservative principles of the party. I never received a response to my letter..."
