MeFi post: Are laws public domain?
Does this not also conflict with the notion that this info was paid for, and therefore is owned by, "the public?"

MeFi post: Alabama Songs
It should be noted that the first link (to the sombre, plaintive and meditative Coltrane tune "Alabama") was written in response to the 1963 bombing by the KKK of the 16th Street Baptist Church that resulted in the deaths of four girls. Nina Simone recorded "Mississippi Goddam" in response to the bombings, and several other songs were recorded in response to it--they are all listed on the wiki page just linked to.... [more]

MeFi post: Your move, Mr Spassky
An extraordinary character in the chess world, all the way to the end. In the late 60's and early 70's he was the Michael Jordan of the chess world. His antics, arrogance and bravado brought chess into the popular imagination.

So interesting that, in his own opinion, he lived a bifurcated life, with a rational chess component and an enthusiastic religious component. Wonder what was going on with his brain.

My older brother... [more]

MeFi post: Abortion as Art
My partner and I have been trying for over a year to get pregnant. She's done artificial insemination a dozen times, with only a single miscarriage (very early on) to show for it. We're up to trying in-vitro now.

So seeing someone continuing to inseminate herself often for the purpose of inducing miscarriage really hurts.

MetaTalk post: Not funny.
Wow, good morning to me. I didn't think that this would happen with my thread, although I'm still somewhat new to metafilter, so perhaps that's what tripped me up. I think that to some extent this is definitely my fault. I was trying very hard not to editorialize, and I think that I ended up just not framing the thread at all, which is what made it seem like outragefilter. In fact, that wasn't my intent, and in the future I will try to find a better balance between a naked link and a screed.... [more]

“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind."

Be brave. Post what YOU find interesting and take your licks. The best way to learn is from direct criticism and direct praise. Sometimes you'll find that other Mefites think your post wonderful, and other times they'll think it's "meh," but you won't know until you try.

Coming out to your folks is never easy. My mom still thinks that God The Father is going to throw me into eternal torment for having the feelings that I do. Although one day I asked her if she would personally send me to hell for being who I am, to which she replied, "Of course not. A loving parent would never harm her child like that."

You could almost see the cognitive dissonance dawning across... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Spice up my risotto!
I have made caramel risotto. The process was a pain in the ass -- caramelizing the sugar took at least two tries, I don't remember anymore, but the first was a serious failure with very burnt sugar -- but the ultimate result was delicious and fabulous as standalone dessert, over ice cream, breakfast, and midday snack. It's on my list of Things That Will Make Me Popular When I Perfect Them For Parties. (I haven't perfected it yet though.)... [more]

MetaTalk post: Paging Dr. ColdChef.
I'm a heathen who was permanently traumatized in my first attempt at pastry making in grade 8 Home Ec (apple pie with a lattice crust that could have been used as decorative ironwork).

There is no "pastry" in clafouti, yet still it crusts. Put me to the rack if you will, but I will not recant.

Allow me to point out that people who are interested in being paged can currently create their own paging environment. Merely use URLs of the form

and you can filter for specific items of interest in your own feedreader (or Firefox, or whatever) without... [more]

MeFi post: America the Godly
I live in one of the most liberal neighborhoods of a very liberal city (shout out to my Wallingford homies!). At our Democratic Party caucus this year, they began with the traditional reading of the rules and procedures.

The woman running the caucus then paused and said "Now, as required by the Washington State Democratic Party, we will begin the caucus by saying the Pledge of Allegiance."

*nervous silence, as we all look around the... [more]

When we met, this person was in college and had aspirations of becoming a great writer. When we broke up, he was manager of a Godfather's Pizza. Flash forward twenty years later, I heard he was manager of a Boston Market. Pot is a helluva drug.

MetaTalk post: Metafilter comments vs. Youtube comments
Does anyone actually read comments at YouTube BTW? Seems like, apart from the occasional dip in to mock them, they are pretty much a write-only phenomena.
posted to MetaTalk by Artw at 1:59 PM on March 24, 2008
Because the comments themselves are not what the sites are about. The sites may document comments, but the content itself (Metafilter: links; YT: video) is what imparts a meaningful signal, which is what is "comparable".
