Compassion doesn't come out of applied logic. There's often no rational reason to show compassion, which makes it such an admirable trait in people.

On the other hand, there is something irrational, even sociopathic, about deliberately, knowingly being cruel in the face of rational (and emotional) attempts for alleviating someone's suffering in their last moments on earth.

You know, it's quite a strange thing. The single most common adjective applied to Mister Rogers in this and other thread is the word 'creepy'?

The irony is too staggering to behold. Kids are put on ritalin and aderall (i.e. amphetamines) to make them perform better at school, but God forbid an adult smokes pot to get him through the mind-numbing tedium of his office job. Would the mandatory drug testing include alcohol? Because that would be an easy way to dispense with 95% of the lawyers in the city.
