To piggyback on paper scissors sock's answer: the US remake of Ghosts is delightful. It's a very different tone than the original, a little less sarcastic of a sense of humor (less British, in other words), but it's every bit as good.

the interesting question is who will be the vp nominee who would become p when trump's advancing senility, or a stroke, makes him unable to even answer a yes or no question. evil folk may be planning a scenario like trump gets in office but takes an exit shortly thereafter and then there's a young compos mentis neofascist sitting in the garden

Of course, the big question now is, "Can Donald Trump raise 88+ million dollars for an appeal?". I think maybe the well's tapped out and he's not actually going to be able to put it up.

I think that depends on how badly Putin, the Saudis, et.al. want/need the useful fool back in office.

He's about to be the presidential nominee. His devotees don't give a F if he's a rapist.

We new that. He basically admitted it in the "Access Hollywood" tape. All his supporters care about is "Owning the Libs" and his promise of "revenge" for...sharing the country with folks not like them, I guess?

Surely this? Nope - it will be years before she sees a cent, and meanwhile he’ll continue on exactly as before.

One of the more interesting things about Trump’s legal issues is how he spotlights,
pretty much daily, how wealth and power exempt you from the law in the US in any meaningful way

I don’t use this construction at all and it struck me as jarringly off when I started noticing it, maybe 10 years ago; but Google does yield examples of things like “demolished” and “planned” as well as “cooked,” “fried,” “eaten,” “chewed,” and others that don’t seem particularly maintenance-adjacent.

Ask MeFi post: Who's the drummer on the Marcels' Blue Moon?
Grrr, I had composed a long detailed attempt at an answer only to have my browser crash.

The short version is that I assume that the drummer was a session musician in the studio employed by the label Colpix. Since according to the story on Vocal Groups Hall of Fame*, the group was snuck (sneaked?) in to make the recording. And my research found that the producer of the recording, Stu Phillips, is still alive at 95 and he can apparently be reached via email according to... [more]

This is progress, and progress is incremental. But no one is free while others are oppressed, and I feel like girl scouts are still being implicitly taught that it's ok to exploit others to achieve their goals. Organic and fair trade and direct trade and things like that are all very accessible in this age. People are obsessed with girl scout cookies, selling a more ethical cookie would not be a hard sell.

Maybe some of the women saying "no" to marriage today were also told "no" themselves in the past, and finally just said "well, okay then".

Decidedly NOT fancy, but I used to have a dish of strawberry bon bons on my desk at work because people loved them. Specifically people loved the look. They'd go "ooh! my [grandma/auntie/beloved next door neighbor lady] always used to have these!" and there you had your conversation opener. The strawberry candies call to people.

A quick google suggests there are a lot of manufacturers so you may be able to find one ethically sourced to your preference.

I used to cat sit for a friend when she went on trips. The first week, the cats wanted nothing to do with me, but by the second week, they’d gotten lonely enough / used to me, and would come out of the woodwork to socialize. I’d probably follow the cat’s lead.

regarding the terra cotta pot suggestion above - even with coarse sand I might be a little concerned about Roberto thinking that you're providing a toilet for him...it's a lovely thought though.

Cats have 'denning instincts' which is why they generally love cardboard boxes (and maybe terra cotta pots). They also typically love warming pads. There are some all-weather types that exist for sale :-)

I am glad that the flash fowards seemed to acknowledge that Midge often was a pretty terrible, self-involved person. Part of what has always bothered me about the Palladinos' work is that while they give us flawed, complicated characters, they then tend to ignore that these are flawed, complicated characters. I don't mind some prickliness -- that's clearly why Midge succeeded -- but I don't like how the show presented her in such a way that seemed like we were supposed to approve of all of it.... [more]

MeFi post: "codewords to use on doctors and such"
I have lucked into the best doctor I've ever met or heard of in my life, which I am immensely thankful for. At the end of my appointment today where we had a tentative diagnosis, she said something like "Is there anything else you feel hasn't been investigated enough", and I was floored. This should be the standard, respecting the patients knowledge of themselves, but also, being not only open to, but interested in hearing if they have their own theories.
