Ask MeFi post: which cigarette brand used the tagline "if you choose to smoke..."?
I have some magazines from the 70s and just checked two at random, a 1973 Family Circle and a 1979 Women's Day. Between the two of them there were 24 (!) cigarette ads, but none of these ones had the particular tagline you're seeking. I will check some others this evening and report back if I find what you're looking for.

Ask MeFi post: What does a job search look like in 2024?
I would say more than anything, don’t be surprised by getting ghosted at any stage of an interview. It seems like the norm in places to not get a response. So cast inquiries expecting some not even to respond back.

The Cat Who...series of mysteries by Lilian Braun featuring two Siamese cats who clue in their human companion.

More feline detection featured in Rita Mae Brown's Mrs Murphy series. The first 15 of these books are amusing but she kinda gets weird and politically sus in later books.

MeFi post: Someone Who Is Good At The Economy Please Help Me
This article is exactly about how the salary in question is not actually hard to live on.

$285,400
the kind of money that upper middle class white collar professionals make in their late 20s.

Sometimes you come across a comment that really drives home the different circles people live in.

Like the author, I don't have a lot of patience for anyone justifying Clarence Thomas' corruption. But I also don't have a lot of patience for people who are attacking the notion of paying the people in the highest court in the land enough salary that they can pay for their own vacations with their peers

Come at it from the other side, tax Clarence's friends so hard there's barely a difference anymore.

Ask MeFi post: How does Bumble work?
I'm on Hinge. It works exactly as you describe. On Bumble I think women have to message first if they are trying to chat with men, but on Hinge as long as you both swipe yes on each other, anyone is allowed to message first.

Then you try to get a conversation going in the direct message part of the app. In my experience, many conversations fizzle out due to boredom and lack of energy. The ones that stay interesting, you try find out if there are any deal breakers,... [more]

One of my cats is particularly fond of being vigorously petted and scratched. At least twice a day, he lies down on my chest, and we do our little "snuggle time" for a few minutes. He purrs like a jet engine.

Ask MeFi post: Is Go fund me ethical in in this situation?
It is unethical for society to let some individuals face the risk of ruin over an illness while other individuals have billions of dollars.

Using GoFundMe to try to prevent the former could not possibly be unethical.

I have literally seen people use GoFundMe to fund a trip to Burning Man just because they wanted to go and didn’t have the cash at the time. Your proposed use is completely ethical.

What is not ethical is your employer failing to provide you with paid medical leave. Start looking for a new job with better benefits.

You have this internet stranger's permission to use a tool that other people use, in the way that other people use it.

I'm not sure how successful a gofundme will be without some kind of viral hook, but mutual aid is a thing so I don't see any ethical harm in trying, assuming you're being honest with people.

Ask MeFi post: Tattoo ettiquete... in this economy
I'd go with something like, "I've had some medical stuff come up and I need to re-prioritize my budget. I'll let you know if I decide to move forward with this at a later time. Thanks!" No lies there, doesn't allow for details that aren't really any of her business, but doesn't burn the bridge either.

I've also had to be delicate in dealing with a tattoo artist, so I think I understand your concerns. My sense is that if the interaction doesn't feel good, then... [more]

I agree that she sounds rude and a bit short-sighted. You don't owe her anything at this point, but if you want, you can say "circumstances have made me reconsider the timing of this tattoo. I need to put it on hold right now."

She knows you cancelled for medical reasons? "This just isn't the right time" and let her imagine whatever she wants from that. If she seriously pushes back even against that, "I don't know when will be. I'll keep you in mind." Because at that point you certainly would keep all of this in mind, wow.

If she doesn't already know it was medical, then I'd consider sharing at least that it is, because it takes you from a potential... [more]

It seems like saying that between the loss of the deposit and some "medical stuff" that's come up you can't afford it right now is a good way to go about it and it isn't even a lie!

I don't know about tattoos, but I use this excuse all the time even though I have plenty of money. Not being able to afford something doesn't mean you don't have the cash to pay for it, it means that it doesn't fit into your budget currently in a way that you find acceptable.

MeFi post: Happy New Free Thread, MetaFilter ... what do you want from 2024?
I want my cancer to go away. Surgery on the 18th has a 70% chance of getting it if nothing changes before then, but I have one more scary test. If that's ok I won't exactly relax (30% chance of chemo and/or radiation is still no fun) but I'll do less contemplating of how to arrange things before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Survival is the goal; everything else comes after that.

I want good health at long last. After nearly 30 years of Crohn’s Disease, my small intestine ruptured and outright died in 2022. I spent a week in a coma with septic shock, then 45 days in the hospital. I had to learn to walk and move my arms again following the coma of nightmarish dreams from which there was no escape. I was not expected to survive, but I flourished and bounced back. I’m even walking without a cane again. My doctors don’t know why I’m still alive. People don’t survive this.... [more]

Back in July I had my aortic valve replaced for the fifth time since I turned 27. (I am now 66.) The surgeon installed a human homograft valve (along with a section of aorta), which was his only option given the condition of the valve site after undergoing four previous replacements. It’s actually a great valve (very performant) but these typically only last for about 10 years. And there’s currently no surgical (or transcatheter) procedure that would allow the valve to be replaced again given... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Is my condensed milk okay?
If it is not very sweet, that is very strange because sweetened condensed milk is REALLY sweet. Does it only taste mildly sweet to your wife too? If I opened a can of sweetened condensed milk and didn't really taste sweetness, I might test myself for Covid, tbh.
posted to Ask MetaFilter by virve at 7:32 PM on December 30, 2023
That's odd. Sweetened condensed milk has a cooked milk taste that you might conceivably describe as mildly musky and the colour can be similar to tahini, but it is definitely very sweet. It is also thick and syrupy. Are you sure you don't have evaporated milk, which is an entirely different thing (basically concentrated canned milk)?

But, I have an undergraduate degree (with honors!) from a well respected state school, and my partner had to drop out of college for financial aid reasons and has yet to go back at 42. He is the only thing that might cause him to hurt himself. If he does himself harm it is because he is by all visible measures a violent, drunken lunatic. Do not allow him, your own internal self-judgment or anyone else to convince you that any part of his bad behavior (fully including potential self-harm) is something for which you need to take responsibility.

People don't need much. It can be 10x10 and a roof to keep the rain off. A bed. A toilet. A small cooker and a locking door.

There are circumstances, not even extreme circumstances, that leave Americans homeless. They can be in a position where they lose their car, job, or house, and even if they pay their taxes all of their life, their registered income will prevent them from any financial assistance. I am glad someone is figuring it out, and I do hope other countries follow Finland's lead.

A big part of the enshitifcation is the poor quality of music - the whole, Pro Tools sound, drum machines, loops and boringness of songs.
