Changing Banks . . .

So, I need a new bank. And I'm picky and I don't need or want a brick-and-mortar.

I wanna take it on the run, baby, cause that's the way I want it, baby.

I watched a documentary tonight about a music festival, and one of the guitar players had a totally awesome-o guitar amp, a little bitty one that he wore around his waist on a leather strap. It basically allowed him to do the wandering-guy-with-guitar routine, but with an electric. What's the best one of these to get, and where's the best place to get it?

The decline of rape aka feel free to walk on my lawn

The three-decade decline in teenage and young-adult rape accompanies huge drops in all crimes -- murder, assault, drug abuse and property -- committed by youth... Women's rapidly rising status and economic independence in the larger society fostered new attitudes and laws that rejected violence against women. That younger people growing up in this environment of greater gender equality should show the biggest decreases in rape, while older generations lag behind, is consistent with this explanation... Over the last 30 years, rape arrest rates have fallen by 80% among Californians under age 15, much larger than the 25% drop among residents age 40 and older.

Step-by-step apartment hunting in NYC

TOTALLY clueless here. Can someone give me step-by-step directions for getting a good deal on an apartment in New York City (preferably with a timetable of when each step should be accomplished relative to "move in day")?

How to leave large sums of money to a drug addict?

Leaving Money to Drug Addicts Filter: My parents have re-written their will, which leaves all of their assets equally to myself and my step-brother. Considering that my step-brother is a drug addict (we also believe that he is a dealer, though he has yet to be arrested as such, so we don't know for sure), this becomes very complicated.

Kinseyian mathematics, of a kind

The "Darwinian paradox" of homosexuality presents the conundrum of how a potential genetic basis for homosexual behavior could provide a survival benefit to offpsring and extend through generations, when sexual reproduction would seem to place strong selection pressure against such a "gene". Recently developed mathematical models (PDF) from researchers Sergey Gavrilets and William Rice not only show how a "gay gene" might proliferate within a population, but also provides testable hypotheses, including predictions of "widespread bisexuality" (subscription req'd).

Beyond Viet Nam - April 4, 1967

Drawer Geeks is an illustration challenge founded by Greg Hardin. Alternate Fridays, a group of 25+ professional animators, illustrators, cartoonists, and designers riff on a given fictional character. This past week's theme was Santa Claus. Very Slowly

"To play this motif 840 times in succession, it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, in the deepest silence, by serious immobilities." Erik Satie's Vexations (previously) was more-or-less disregarded as an unperformable thought experiment, until John Cage staged an eighteen-hour performance in 1963. The event cemented Satie's importance in avant-garde music and his influence on a generation of artists. In 2006, several musicians and artists performed their own renditions.

Intriguing Line Art by Thomas Broome

Swedish artist Thomas Broomé's series "Modern Mantra" is a collection of 14 New Yorkeresque ink illustrations of scenes using the names of the objects being drawn as the illustration technique itself; it's complicated to describe, but the results are pretty compelling. Another exhibit worth checking out at the artist's homepage is the Coca-Locust gallery, a series of locusts made from Coca-Cola product logos worldwide.
