MetaTalk post: MeFiSwap Mailing Deadline is Monday Feb 28 2011
My CDs finally shipped, here's front and back. It's a mix of americana, alt/gothic country with a dash of cabaret thrown in.

The track are listed below. If there was YouTube version of the band doing the song live, I linked to that (but the CD has the studio version). If there was no Live version, then I linked to the studio version on YouTube and if there wasn't that, then I just linked to somewhere on their home page where you can sample the band's... [more]

I find unwitting redundancy as annoying as anyone, so I hear where you're coming from, but (a) it's also not a big deal and (b) identifying unwitting vs. witting redundancies is a Hard Problem, and (c) really really not a big deal.

People will apply social pressure to egregious cases, which hopefully will teach folks commenting carelessly to do so with more care in the future; beyond that, no real harm done and building a new system just to try and head off some of that... [more]

I like that there is a prompt, even if the prompt somehow felt a bit weird to me. I like when people include pictures of themselves in their profile, and I like when people talk a little bit about themselves and their ideas in their profile.

In fact, I find that almost all my favorite posters here have well-populated profiles. The connection seems to be that with a picture and some thoughts/description there, I can better understand them as human beings. It puts a face... [more]

MetaTalk post: so it's open season on fratboys?
Deciding what's ok or not based in large measure on how outraged people are about it doesn't seem like a good idea, in any community.

I don't think jessamyn means to suggest that collective outrage is the defining measure of what is okay or not, just that it drives some of the feedback mechanisms that present themselves, whether overt (people electing to rebuke an obnoxious comment in thread or not) or indirect (people flagging something as problematic)... Cruelty-to-animals is not just something that isolated sickos do. It's is -- and always has been -- an institutional part of most human... [more]

Hi. How are you? I have so much to be thankful for at this time of the year I still get choked up about it. It's fucking cold out there. I'm doing a lot better. Just a few days and a year ago on the day of my birthday I checked myself into the psych ward at a huge, scary, overloaded LA hospital in an attempt to engage the system and get better help w/ depression. I'm of the first or second generation of people who grew up on the internet. I was first introduced to the internet in 1993, when I was 12 years old. I glommed onto it very quickly, and soon a large chunk of my life was spent online, on IRC, Usenet and the very primitive web (which certainly didn't feel primitive at the time). Soon I became a part of various net communities, but they were always peripheral to my existence. My favorite part of internetting was drifting around, finding interesting... [more]

MetaTalk post: How about retiring "beanplating" as a meme?
I find it helpful to understand that "You're over-thinking it" usually means you've hit a nerve.

The other party, unwilling or unable to address the points themselves, instead resorts to arguing that the line of reasoning itself is somehow insignificant. It's sort of like a straw man, in reverse.

In a just and righteous world, "you're under-thinking it" would be the condemnation of choice. Let's face it: under-thinking is... [more]
