MetaTalk post: End the "Brand New Day" Policy?
I cooked this recipe last weekend:

Roasted Eggplant Aubergine Soup

Ingredients
3 medium tomatoes, halved
1 (1 1/2 lb) eggplants, halved lengthwise
1 small onion, halved
6 garlic cloves, peeled
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme, chopped
4 cups chicken stock or low sodium chicken broth (or more)
1 cup... [more]

Sure, there are some people you will never be able to have a productive discussion with--we see proof of that here every day. But one first step might be becoming a person who can have a productive discussion about things you disagree with.

Yeah, this. It wasn't that long ago (more than a year and a half, I guess) that like pretty much everyone on MetaFilter shit their pants with excitement over a guy claimingIt is that fundamental belief -- It is... [more]

I saw some (not all) of the posters in that thread casually spout off opinions about people involved in the Tea Party movement, opinions they have simply because they saw pictures of SOME teapartiers or saw interviews of SOME teapartiers saying stupid stuff.

I just have such a hard time taking St. Alia's point on this, because I have been to like 500 Gay Pride marches in my life and the coverage is always so balanced, thorough, and fair-minded. The... [more]

Dude, you don't even have the stones to link to the comment that enraged you enough to post this. Bad form. Play the ball, and not the bunny.

That said:

Roast one eggplant in the oven at 180' celsius for 30-40 minutes.
Squeeze the eggplant out of its skin into a sieve, and push the juice out with a spoon
Put the pulp in a food processor with 2 eggs, a handful of chopped basil, 2 cloves of garlic , 1/3-1/2 a cup of grated... [more]

I think there's only, like, two of us though. HOWEVER twitter is insanely popular in town and I can easily get people together on Friday.

Food: Glacier Brewhouse is good for lunch, dinner, as is Humpy's. Urban Greens on G St and 3rd has good sandwiches and a salad that I'm completely addicted to. Oh, absolutely. My specialty? Appropriation theory. Found footage is what I DO know more about than the average bear. As I have before expressed my wishes to, after my death, have my corpse animated by a colony of bees or wasps, I think it only fitting to ask whatever craven caretaker mines my thorax for honey to please restrict my MetaFilter output to the green. Maybe a compromise would be a retooled Preview button? I always thought the preview was a bit clunky, especially since the Live Preview was disabled after you hit preview. Perhaps if the Preview feature was a little more streamlined, this would be less of an issue for people? Dunno.

MetaTalk post: MeFiSwap Mailing Reminder - Saturday January 23!
I know it's counter-intuitive, but there's value in the clunky, inefficient, slow-you-down, costly, time-consuming process of bothering to burn CDs, design covers, find addresses, mail them...and wait.

I had a massively annoying day. Receiving two CDs in the mail and a thank you from a CD-receiver today spared me from taking out today's trifles on my much-deserving car (with a crowbar in hand, ready to go). It kind of turned the whole listing ship around for me, thanks.... [more]

I really really really want the physical CDs. It's a nice little thing sitting on my shelf. I'm thrilled to have the mixes to download, too, but when I do my physical copies, I actually source the songs from the physical media (if I have that) so the sound quality is better. Plus, the whole ritual of creating the packages and going to the post office and receiving mixes in the mail... It's just totally groovy, and makes me smile.
posted to MetaTalk by hippybear at 7:11 PM on January 26, 2010
Personally, I think swapping a physical CD is getting obsolete - sharing a mix online seems easier and cheaper all round.

Easier and cheaper is overrated. I love that we exchange physical CDs. Even my non-Metafilterarian SO, who giveth not a damn about online internet communities, thinks it's pretty damn cool that I'm getting CDs in the mail every day this week.

MetaTalk post: How long blues
> How long does it take you to make a informative, couple of paragraph long, multi-link post?

Sigh. Once more, with feeling: a post does not have to be multi-link and (for Pete's sake) multi-paragraph to be informative. A post that consists of a single link can be excellent. Many multi-link, multi-paragraph posts are (in my opinion) crappy and not worth however long it took to construct them.

It has long been my opinion that the inability of the average user to distinguish genuine disagreement from trolling is a good yardstick for determining just how much of an echo chamber a given site is. If you are unable to discern that someone simply does not agree (with or without evidence to back it up) from someone who is tossing out broad bait in the hopes that something will rise to the surface and snap, you are not getting enough dissent in your diet.
