MeFi post: Divided We Fall
You somehow managed to omit "Medicaid" from the relevant policies defended by the Democratic Party, which is impressive as it's the subject of this post.

Here's the funny thing about the ACA. If you are poor enough to qualify for the medicaid expansion (and your state has expanded it) then you can get, pretty much, free or close to free medical care, if you can find doctors and clinics that will treat medicaid patients. If you can afford a... [more]

>Daesh has limited ability to strike back at the western military forces hitting them in Syria and Iraq.

Untrue. They could target world military bases with suicide jihadists if they choose. They chose not to because they are terrorists and specifically target innocent civilians as a terror tactic.

Isis is not a victim here, limited in their abilities to fight back. They are making a very formalized choice to target innocents to spread... [more]

I've been crying and thinking about all this. In my social circle, people are posting hashtags and photos about the tragedy, most only for Paris, but some also post for Lebanon (45 dead) and Baghdad (14 dead). Even though it's almost halfway the world over, to see people sympathizing and mourning others whom they don't know, have different languages and skin colour not to mention religion and culture is a proof of some kind that we could care, at least superficially,... Does anyone know why France has been the target of at least 3 recent terrorist gun attacks

Paris is the #1 city in the world for tourism, so if you're going to strike at a European city then Paris is probably your best bet for worldwide psychological impact.

So many people have either been there themselves or been subjected to friends' and family's vacation photos of the city that an attack on Paris feels more personal than an attack on most other cities.

Ask MeFi post: Last minute question re illegal eviction & settling with evil landlord
2000$ may not even cover the damages, especially if stuff was smashed. It sounds like this guy knows he is looking at possible jail time + easy lawsuit and is trying to get her out.

If she has a disabling mental condition, then she is protected under the ADA against many forms of discrimination (as well as I believe the Fair Housing Act).

If anyone wants further technical reading, here are some recent notes from the NCTE about Obama admin input (copied from a PDF - apologies if I missed some weirdness):

Education
- Gender identity discrimination is sex discrimination.
- Students have the right to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity.
- Students have the right to class placements and overnight accommodations based on their gender identity.

Ask MeFi post: Oh My God, Please Stop That!
This is what works for me: Betting against myself. I know my coworker is going to do a lot of annoying things, so when I'm feeling particularly stressed and annoyed by it I say to myself, "I bet she's going to clear her ever-loving throat at least 15 times in the next hour." Then I make hash marks on a piece of paper and keep track. And here's the best part: If she clears her throat 18 times, I'm all "Yay, I won!" and if she doesn't I'm like, "Yes!!! I only had to put up... [more]

I can't find a manual for the GrandPad, but it looks like it's a pretty recent device and so I suspect that the WEP encryption is the problem. WEP was thoroughly compromised 10+ years ago and thus cannot do its one job of providing security, and is effectively a dead standard. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the GrandPad developers didn't bother supporting it properly (though it would've been nice, given their target audience, if at the very least they'd given a helpful error message.)... MetaTalk post: Not All Problems Are Caused By Being Asian.
The thing about "This is a cultural question. Maybe your culture matters." is that no one ever says this to white people. White people don't have a "culture" as "culture" is defined in this statement, because what "culture" means in this statement is "assortment of stereotypes and fictions I have heard about you people". A white person's culture is properly understood to be such a unique blend of their history and experiences that it's ludicrous,... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How to come out as trans?
I guess what I'm saying is, don't panic and don't feel like the initial message has to be perfect. It's not like there's a perfect coming-out email that will guarantee a good reaction. And people's initial reactions, based on whatever dumb preconceptions they've picked up, have almost nothing to do with what they'll end up thinking of you once they see what your transition really looks like.

I had face-to-face conversations with my immediate family, and then with close friends, and then sent a long email around to distant family and acquaintances. The face-to-face conversations were good because they let me figure out what was important to say in the email. My experience was that the really important things were:
Saying out loud that our friendship wouldn't be changing drastically — I still liked the people and places and things that I liked, and I wasn't planning on... [more]

r/ftm is okay. It does skew younger, so people's coming out circumstances may be rather different to yours--I assume my relationship with my parents at age 40 will be rather different than it was at 20. r/asktransgender is much bigger, but not so helpful, particularly for afab people.

MeFi post: The First, But Not The Champion
What I love about this show/sport is because of the nature of the competition -- person vs. environment -- you don't see people rooting against competitors. Sure, you see people cheering for their favorites, but you don't see anyone in the crowd going, "FALL! FALL! MISS IT, FUCKER! TRIP AND FALL!" You often seen competitors cheering each other on, even when there's real money on the line.

It's like gymnastics that way,... [more]

1) For the equality ordinance, the "best" (relative term here, I don't like it, because in a way it reinforces the mindset, but it speaks directly to them) retort is image macros I've seen that show post-transition Trans men and say "Do you want me in your bathroom?" something like that.

In the long run, I think the best PR against bathroom bills won't be those "burly trans man in the ladies' room" photos — really, those just reinforce the connection in people's minds between "trans stuff" and "male intruders."

The one I'm surprised we haven't seen, though, is stories where an early-transitioning, small-framed, extremely-feminine-looking girl coming home from her first year at college gets forced to use the big scary... [more]

I get annoyed when people trot this line of argument out. Look, I'm not an idiot and I know that days are shorter in the winter and longer in the summer.
