The Pentium as a Navajo weaving
Hurrying through the National Gallery of Art five minutes before closing, I passed a Navajo weaving with a complex abstract pattern. Suddenly, I realized the pattern was strangely familiar, so I stopped and looked closely. The design turned out to be an image of Intel's Pentium chip, the start of the long-lived Pentium family.
Kaos: Episode 1
A darkly comedic and contemporary reimagining of Greek mythology, exploring themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld. Zeus (Jeff Goldblum) receives an ominous prophecy that makes him questions his omnipotence, his wife/sister/queen Hera (Janet McTeer) enjoys listening to the complaints of the mortals in the modern city, and Prometheus (Stephen Dillane) narrates from his chains. In this episode, Eurydice, known as Riddy (Aurora Perrineau) is going to break up with rock-star Orpheus (Killian Scott), when (spoiler alert!) she dies and is ferried by a cruise ship across the Styx. Inspired by Orpheus' music, Dionysus (Nabhaan Rizwan) decides to try to reunite the two lovers to prove that he has more purpose than party.
Star Wars space battles the way they should have been, 1980s style
This really amazing 7-minute Star Wars animated short, in the style of 1980s anime like Macross, shows a space battle where the Empire are the good guys taking on a squadron of dasterdly rebels. Enjoy missile trails, awesome sudden close-ups, totally radical explosions, split screens of attractive TIE fighter pilots, and a vaguely annoying anime-inspired soundtrack. This PDF shows how it was all made and introduces you to the characters, along with some neat concept sketches.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Past Tense, Part I
A transporter accident sends Sisko, Bashir, and Dax three centuries into Earth's dark past to 2024, where the United States has attempted to solve the problem of homelessness by erecting "Sanctuary Districts" -- makeshift ghettos for unemployed and / or mentally ill persons. They've arrived just days before a violent incident that will lead to a turning point in Earth's history. Now they must find a way to avoid disrupting the timeline and get back to the 24th century.

sunshine follows thunder
Oasis are back together. 15 years after the band broke up, they have announced a reunion tour of 14 dates in 2025 in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin, with tickets on sale on Saturday. “The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised,” the band said.
Alan MacMasters: How the great online toaster hoax was exposed
For more than a decade, a prankster spun a web of deception about the inventor of the electric toaster. His lies fooled newspapers, teachers and officials. Then a teenager flagged up something that everyone else had missed.
A Timeline of Earth's Average Temperature Since the Last Ice Age
When people say "the climate has changed before," these are the kinds of changes they're talking about. A handy (and terrifying) infographic by Randall Munroe.
Another help-me-find-a-comic question. Ridiculous vampire hunters.
A group of vampire hunters are talking about how Dracula is going to be sorry when they catch him. One lady has apparently fixated on the idea of doing something uncomfortable to him in the crotch region, and keeps saying that they're going to "get up in his AREAS".
"Overwhelmingly positive."
"Since the cancellation, MIT Libraries estimates annual savings at more than 80% of its original spend. This move saves MIT approximately $2 million each year, and the Libraries provide alternative means of access that fulfills most article requests in minutes."
It's a Good Start
The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) and Independent Publishers Group (IPG) have announced a groundbreaking agreement that will allow libraries to purchase ebooks under the aegis of the IPG instead of renting them at eye-watering prices.

time travel, soup, and a badly-kept secret
"Since when did Angelique Lancaster even look at this table, much less schlep over and sit at it?" A wish-fulfillment story fragment, inspired by the prompt "A loving, married couple wake up one day to find that they have returned to their high school days, when they were the most popular student and the class geek." Do mind the content notes at the start.
new short stories by Kelly Robson and Marissa Lingen
Two short fantasy stories about journeys, meant to provide care, that go in unexpected directions. "Median" by Kelly Robson (published March 2024 in Reactor (formerly Tor.com)): a horror story in which "a professional caregiver’s commute takes an unsettling detour when car trouble forces her to pull over on the highway, where she begins receiving distressing phone calls from strangers…" (Via Jason Sanford who said it "left me completely unsettled.") And "A Pilgrimage to the God of High Places" by Marissa Lingen (published May 2024 in Beneath Ceaseless Skies): "When I had taken leave from the Archives to go on this pilgrimage, no one had expected that a pilgrimage to the god of high places would cure me. Friends expressed shock that I would even try."
Flying Colors Comics, Free Comic Book Day, and the Comic Book Market
"And it wasn't until we had a meeting with representatives from the Comics Buyer's Guide that we had to decide whether we were going to do a free comic book day at all. Maggie Thompson was there, John Jackson Miller – the editor – was there, executives from Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse were all there. The team from Diamond Comics was there. And it was then-Image publisher Jim Valentino who suggested we put Free Comic Book Day on the weekend when the spotlight on comics content would be brightest because of the Spider-Man movie." A fascinating interview in The Comics Journal about the history of modern comics, the origin story of Free Comic Book Day, the changing of demographics of comics readers (2021; 2017; 2024), indie comics, and whole lot more, including the tale of a (comic book store's) death averted.
Yo Microsoft Raps
"Welcome! To the MS-DOS 5.0 upgrade training!" (5 minutes; warning: old software ad, white guy rap, severe cringe)
from "ASAP" to "betimes"
"I’m working on a list of corporate jargon alternatives." Matt Watson proposes that we replace modern business phrases with "equally swanky alternatives from English of a bygone era." Examples: changing "I will check on that and circle back with you." to "I will investigate the matter and bring thee word again." and switching from "This is our new normal." to "Of such is our new state of affairs."

Monsieur Le Rock Star, the Vampire Lestat
SDCC gave us all a lil treat: the introduction of Lestat de Lioncourt as the rock star he becomes in The Vampire Lestat. Still using the biography framing, but in documentary form, it sounds like Daniel is delving deep into our beloved bi disaster show pony.
Also, if AMC+ does NOT release that single on iTunes or similar, I will riot.
I can't wait for season 3!
DOT’s Pre-Halloween Guide to Streaming 2024
A list of horror highlights by streaming service! Each of these services has too many to really cover in total, so I am highlighting just a few favorites for each, largely bypassing the better known stuff (though obviously fellow true believers may have seen most of these even so.)
Voter Fraud at the Hugos
No strangers to controversy (previously: sad puppies for a few years, self-censorship last year), the Hugo Awards have been hit again, this time by fraudulent voting. According to Glasgow 2024 Hugo Admin, nearly 10% of the votes cast were not by “natural persons.” Read or listen to the full statement.
World's Worst Most Divorced Dad
In an interview with noted right wing figure and transphobe Jordan Peterson, Elon Musk attacked his estranged transgender daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson, proceeding to deadname her while calling her "dead" because she transitioned, and saying he was "tricked" into signing off on her gender affirming care. In response, Wilson has given an interview with NBC News in which she details how Musk was both an abusive and absentee father while she was growing up, and how he lied about her interests growing up as well as his signing off on her care.
