MeFi post: Obama On OBL: The Full "60 Minutes" Interview
"Those dumb-fuck 20-something goons chanting "USA USA USA" in the darkness"

Allow me to jump in here for a minute. I rode my bike over to the White House (Lafayette Square) a few minutes after Obama made his announcement.

Yes. There were a number of dumb fucks shouting USA USA USA in the darkness, and there was a dude on stilts wearing an american flag bodysuit. (I should add that virtually all of these... [more]

Keep in mind that obviously when I was still campaigning for president I had said that if I ever get a shot at bin Laden we're gonna take it. And I was subject to some criticism at the time because I had said if it's in Pakistan and, you know, we don't have the ability to capture him in any other way, then we're gonna go ahead and take the shot.

MetaTalk post: RTFA Day
There are people who are reading the article who just disagree as well. I'm not sure additional hollering at them is going to really change things up much.

That said, I can get behind RTFA Day as a concept and I declare 5/6/11 MeFi RTFA day henceforth.

MeFi post: Neil Gaiman and the Invisible Hand
Lemme see if I understand this.

1. A library had been offered funds specifically earmarked for having writers come in and talk. These funds could not be used on anything else, and they were going to go poof into the air if they were not used.

2. Neil Gaiman comes in and agrees to do a talk, then after giving his publicity staff their cut, hands the rest to two charity organizations.

3. Matt Dean froths, points, name-calls.... [more]

I wonder how much funding I could get for a product that scans emails for the word "attached" or "attachment" that have no attachment and pop up a warning dialog box to the user saying:

Did you mean to attach something to this email?

It will stem the tide of emails every one of us gets every day that start with "Sorry - forgot the attachment" as well as the countervailing flood of replies saying... [more]

I'm going to be super dooper unpopular for saying this, but: Who cares?

Honestly, the US govt, hell Henry Kissinger has been directly responsible for killing more innocent people than Osama Bin Laden could have even dreamt of. There are no military actions, or protests, or celebrations about that.

Bin Laden is not unique in any way, not for hating the US, for his medieval conservativism, for killing thousands of innocents,... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How do major chains make pizza?
[This is a response from an anonymous commenter.]

I work for Domino's!

Pizza dough is shipped to us from the supplier in trays of pre-formed blobs of different sizes -- small through extra large. We let it "proof" or rise a little and store it in the walk-in refrigerator along with all the other food. The pizza toppings are shipped to us as well, and every morning food prep involves pouring the fresh toppings into the little containers... [more]

It sounds like you don't want to be in this marriage and are looking for us to justify you leaving.

I don't know what vows you took, but when I took mine, it was "till death do you part." My wife stuck by me through some pretty bad shit (a couple of nervous breakdowns and me almost leaving her because of my depression).

It's not that he's after Piven. He's after somebody that can represent liberal academia. The idea is to create an atmosphere of fear around the teaching of ideas. The goals:

1. Scare Piven herself into not speaking as much/as vociferously.
1a. Scare other liberal academics ("Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't discuss this... look what happened to Piven.")
2. Scare CUNY into shutting her down

Here's a (rhetorical) solution to this problem: prior to the advent of CNN, news in the United States was the responsibility of three major networks, a public television network, and a combination of radio stations and newspapers. Subsequently, those networks still exist, but have been supplemented by the vast swath of the internet and a series of political entertainment channels (admittedly, lots of newspapers have died in their too, but that seems a separate problem).
