I like how the men are wrong and the women are right. That cleared a lot of stuff up for me.

Is there a world where I can say that I didn't care for the comic without it being implicitly read that I hate women and all things related to them?

Because I don't, I just didn't especially care for it, and I wonder.

Ask MeFi post: When did America Know About the Holocaust?
What "concentration camp" means to you in 2007 is probably different than what "concentration camp" would have meant to someone before World War II. From the Boer War in 1899-1902 until World War II, a concentration camp was an internment camp used to hold civilians.*

Germany founded six large concentration camps for "undesirables" before the war-- Dachau (1933), Sachsenhausen (1936), Buchenwald (1937), Flossenbürg (1938), Mauthausen (1938)... [more]

MetaTalk post: accusations of anti-semitism
I grew up in a Pakistan where anti-semitism (in the sense of being bigoted about Jews) is pretty much the norm, if Jews are ever mentioned. Most Pakistanis I know have never met anyone who is Jewish; the anti-Jewish sentiment stems entirely from two things, as far as I can tell: 1) the Palestine-Israel conflict, and 2) a version of Islamic history that only talks about Jews in the context of the breaking of a peace treaty by Jewish tribes in Medina, in the time of the Prophet (which is also the... I remember when I was about sixteen or so and I finally became aware of the fact that I was gay, and that my lifelong attraction to other boys wasn't just a fluke or some bizarre phase that I would grow out of.

Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian household, I had heard all the right sermons. These overpowering feelings of mine were Abominations Unto The Lord, and that when the End Times came (and surely thou art coming soon, Lord Jesus), I would be judged and found... [more]

People who think that intelligence agencies aren't monitoring the internet and "social media" spaces don't understand how computers (and telecommunications) work. They've been doing it for years, and they don't need rooms full of people to do it.

Echelon is real. It's not pie in the sky paranoid science fiction garbage, it's demonstrably provable that it works in theory, and would be very affordable compared to many other known projects - and this was... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Are we too old to trick or treat?
Here's a spin on reverse-trick-or-treating that I got a kick out of. I grew up in a college town, and one Halloween our doorbell rang and we opened the door expecting to see trickortreaters-- but what was in front of our open door--was another door! Like, a full-on wooden door, that had a sign that said "Please knock." So we did, and the door swung open to reveal a bunch of college dudes dressed as really old grandmothers, curlers in their hair, etc, who proceeded to coo over our... [more]

The Doctor should serve his full 12 and then be done with it. He should die with finality. He should have a funeral fit for the final Time Lord. A eulogy. His companions should mourn him. Even the Daleks will be sad to see their enemy go.

The camera should angle on a crotchety old woman in the crowd. "I don't look forward to that," she'll say to a young boy, her grandchild, "but it's a long time yet," and they'll both walk off to... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Post-Breakup Friendship Battles
You will lose all of your mutual friends to her. Sorry. You seem to recognize this dynamic and be interested in preventing it from happening; but there is no prevention. You moved to the city after her, so they all know her better (ace 1); she seems to be more outgoing and extroverted than you anyway (ace 2); you say you're depressed (ace 3); AND she's making a concerted effort to take them all away from you (ace 4). Ask MeFi post: What if she won't ever do what I need to do?
What I was trying to say is, please assume Number 4 and 5 are off the table

And what many of us are trying to say, explicitly and implicitly, is that if you think #4 and #5 are off the table and you try #3—because #1 and #2 won't lead to anything but misery—then #4 will happen anyways, only be much shittier when it does happened because you stupidly decided to get married without resolving this in a real, adult way.

Anyways, good luck.

Two weekends ago, I sold my Citroën. It'd taken me about eight years to come to grips with letting it ago, and if that says something about me, so be it. I'd put eighty thousand insane miles on it, up and down the eastern seaboard, from spending four hours stuck in a solid traffic jam on the Cross Bronx Expressway with the ARRET! light falsely warning me that the car was about to overheat to moments on Route 301 in South Carolina where I did the little mental arithmetic to... MeFi post: Used games, the letters of marque of the gaming world?
From the Penny Arcade post: If I am purchasing games in order to reward their creators, and to ensure that more of these ingenious contraptions are produced, I honestly can't figure out how buying a used game was any better than piracy.

This, I think, is the key disconnect between me and Tycho on this issue: he's buying a game because he wants to reward the developer for making it. I'm buying a game because I want to play a game.... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Breaking Up is Hard To Do
An after thought. I ran an emergency mental health agency that saw 600-900 persons per month. We saw almost every attempted suicide in the region except those that required emergency medical stabilization--and then we saw them after they were medically stabilized. Some persons with preexisting psychiatric problems do attempt suicide due to the termination of a significant relationship--many more threaten suicide and very very few commit suicide. A suicide threat should be taken seriously... [more]

Ask MeFi post: You were doing it wrong
There are two things I've done wrong for most of my life.

My folks came over from Korea, and I was born a year after they'd arrived. I grew up in a traditional Korean household, as the oldest of three boys, and was tasked with the duties and responsibilities one would imagine as being typical for anyone who is the oldest sibling of a bunch, as well as being expected to pursue the prototypical and stereotyped alpha Asian male: be the second head of the household, behind... So, last spring (Good Friday, if you can believe it) a really big tornado roared through our town, destroyed 300+ homes and killed two people. I stood on the front porch of my house with the radio in one hand, eyeballing the sky in the direction it was coming from and, sure as shit, we saw it through the trees - like a big column of smoke. While behind the trees, it sort of dissipated and we lost sight of it. About a minute later it reformed and I had a clear-as-a-bell view of it. Straight out... [more]

This is a classic case of Ask Culture meets Guess Culture.

In some families, you grow up with the expectation that it's OK to ask for anything at all, but you gotta realize you might get no for an answer. This is Ask Culture.

In Guess Culture, you avoid putting a request into words unless you're pretty sure the answer will be yes. Guess Culture depends on a tight net of shared expectations. A key skill is putting out delicate feelers. If you do... [more]
