MetaTalk post: On MeFi, everyone knows you're dog.
Here's a modified version.
It has some nice padding, a border between the image and the comment, and uses the generic icon for people without uploaded images.

MetaTalk post: Q.E.D.
I know what FTW stands for, but I always read it initially as "fut the wuck?" (whether or not the original "FTW" was followed by a question mark). It seems like the sort of Spoonerism a conservative teenager would use in order to almost swear.

MetaTalk post: Take it to Metatalk if you don't like it.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be. Whisper words of wisdom, let it be. And when the broken-hearted people living in the world agree, there will be an answer, let it be. For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see, there will be an answer. Let it be.

More to the point -- now that I've had my lunch -- I think that not only could MeTa stand to have the "everyone needs a hug" note (did anyone make t-shirts form the iron ons I handed out at the Cambridge meetup way back when?) but maybe posting a thread to Meta should come with a set of checkboxes

No, no, no, a thousand times no. You are completely missing the point of MetaFilter having moderators at all. Under your formulation, Matt, Jess, cortex and vacapinta make all the decisions and set all the rules and the rest of us have absolutely no input into the discussion at all. That wasn't the way Matt set up the website in the first place, but he could have if he wanted to - after all, there were (and are) many, many examples of such strong-moderation communities aound to pattern the place... MetaTalk post: AskMe Noise
I would like to hear from a mod why lulz-ifying an unequivocally doomed thread is "knob"ish.

Because, first of all, doomed thread or not it's against the guidelines to go lulz-ifying in AskMe. Check the FAQ; the bit about "...unless the askme is totally bonkers in which case, fuck it, GO NUTS!!!" was not omitted by accident.

And because, secondly, people are sometimes wrong about whether or not a thread is... [more]

MetaTalk post: Why deleted?
So, there I was starting a search through MeTa for "censor" to find some real censorship. Then I find this odd search page, which declares that user "demo has been censored!".

Further investigation led to demo's MetaTalk post, which was definitely uncensored.

MetaTalk post: From the green to the blue!
I would like to start posting links on the blue, but I don't want to get dissed for posting something lame.

There are a lot of good resources linked here, and some good first-hand advice, about how to do a good job on a post you decide to make, but I want to sort of emphasize something: wanting generically to post something to the front page isn't a particularly good reason to make a post.

Enthusiasm, wanting... [more]

So to go with Big Big Question, who wants to help me start 'Fiddly, Fiddly Question'?

BBQ seems to be going for the big whoah questions, but Fiddly Fiddly Question could target little questions like:

- How far from the edge of a table should a glass of liquid be to be 'safe' from falling off?
- Is it better to have a poop that wipes clean on the first try or one that makes your pants fit better?
- If species of trees had... [more]

MetaTalk post: Queuing questions.
In the sub-basement of what was once an industrial park, the server continued asking questions to the void. The network was long-gone--the ethernet cables vaporized right where they emerged to the surface--but this didn't stop the server. It had a queue.

The third wave of bombings had collapsed the ceiling, destroying almost all the other racks in the room, but the server remained. It was closest to the large metal cage that held the enormous emergency power supply. It... [more]

For those of you who didn't get the point of the OP, I wrote a short essay that I believe summarizes the main points:

An essay on MetaFilter post writing
The subject of MetaFilter post writing is a controversial issue. The constantly changing fashionable take on MetaFilter post writing demonstrates the depth of the subject. Remarkably MetaFilter post writing is heralded by shopkeepers and investment bankers alike, leading many to state that its influence on... [more]

Also yeah, thanks for supporting the plain theme. My dirty secret little secret is that I can't stand all the colors, black on white text is where it's at, so when people say "the blue, the gray, the green" I just imagine a civil war drama.

MetaTalk post: Is calling a poster a cheap jerk appropriate for the green?
I know what Tempe tastes like.

Cottonwood trees, creosote bushes, tweakers, spoiled yuppie loinfruit, crass commercialism, overused cars, heaping piles of bird shit and just a touch of unwashed, remaindered hippy as a garnish.

It's the same taste you'd get if you blended an organic food co-op, a P.F. Changs, a Chili's and the sticky-greasy Birkenstock of a street busker together into a smoothie and baked it on the dashboard of your car in 120 degree heat.
