MetaTalk post: triple post and no follow-through
Benny Andajetz, your FPP said: NEWSFILTER: Military Wants Rummy Gone. Now you say, The military Times papers speak for the military...

Both statements are just wrong.

The first statement is so wrong, it's dangerous. Do you have any idea what would happen to our constitutional republic if our active-duty military ever thought they could challenge their civilian leadership as you suggest?

The second... [more]

MetaTalk post: Please close this argument
there are still people in that thread who refuse to believe that Haggard's been lying, even in the face of direct evidence from his own mouth--that alone should be enough to keep it open.

It's also still developing as a story--let the thread be where all the updates go.

Oh, wow. Holy shit. Look for this: "These are the lowest-ranked movies, in order of ascending average ranking:"

Look at the chart under it. Look at the ninth item. It's Rise of the Undead.

Err... I directed that. No kidding. And my mama never thought I'd amount to anything.

MetaTalk post: Just because philosophists don't get anything done...
You know, a lot of these deleted chatfilter AskMes could have been great posts in the blue. If you are interested in reactions to mortality, maybe do a little reading, find some interesting links on the subject, and make your question part of a post on the front page? Some of my favorites posts ever (crazy stuff you believed when you were a kid, say) started that way.

MetaTalk post: This thread is just turning into "dump on women"
Turning into? The subtitle of that post is "dump on women." I don't understand how that sort of thing isn't the definition of chatfilter, but then just what is the definition of chatfilter is one of those imponderable mysteries that keep me going to church. But I must say I couldn't see the three comments you linked to as offensive. Dumb, maybe, but I can't think of an answer to a question like that that isn't basically dumb.

MeFi post: Hasta La Vista, Habeas Corpus
That's not irony Krrrlson. I very much mean what I said. It's righteous condescension.

Adherence to the GC and Constitution (which says, by all means, if someone is trying to attack the country lock them up, but if they're a citizen, present some evidence, try and convict them, and then lock them up for life or execute them) isn't what lost the war in Iraq, and is losing the war on terror. Incompetence is. Plain, simple incompetence on the part... [more]

MeFi post: Internet Explorer 7 Released
However, you can secure a linux box (and it's filesystem) to the point that it's not as trivial as an issue, even with full physical access.

Ah, no. The threat model for an attacker with physical access to the device is pretty much the same for any hardware running any operating system, and Linux certainly doesn't possess any qualities that makes it any stronger in the face of that threat than Windows is.

Give me local access to the machine and I can "hack" any aspect of the default security in 30 seconds - with full access to your precious NTFS drives and passwords

Wow. It's not like you can't do that to linux with a bootable disk or anything. Windows is the sux!

MetaTalk post: I have a question about personal info privacy concerns on MeFi
As an academic (ahem), I am totally unconcerned with such matters, and frequently post personal, identifying information wherever (and whenever) appropriate.

This is rooted in the fact that departments that are hiring you are not going to be doing extensive google searches, and then pass you over because of a few jokey comments here and there - they just aren't. If the few departments that I have been involved in are any indication, most wouldn't even think of using... [more]

MetaTalk post: Is this Best Posts link for August supposed to be there?
I think it should remain for the illustrative aspect of it.

People should have access to a collection of posts which are demonstrative of what we want here at Metafilter. It's the inverse of broken windows.

It might be worthwhile to put some context on the page explaining that there was a contest each day and those are the selected winners.

But it should remain. We should triumph excellence so that people may have an idea of what we triumph.

MeFi post: systematically eliminated or weakened rules designed to enforce the separation of church and state
so long as the feeding part does not require the listening part. I didn't find anything in that article that lead me to believe that the recipients of the aid were required to participate in the religious ceremonies only that they were offered in addition to the aid.

Actually, that is in the article. And there's no oversight on whether any of these groups are requiring participation or not in the prayer and attempted conversion before giving aid or food or whatever it is.

Of course it's a serious and potentially dangerous perversion. But pedophilia it ain't. Because that difference between 8 year olds and 16 year olds is a significant one, as most of you may remember. While teens are still forming their sexuality and can be damaged by contact like this, there is little doubt that they are sexual creatures in their own right (as a lot of these IM's illustrate) and have adult sexual features that can be appealing to adults. Lumping them in with the... [more]
